Contemporary Christian, Guitar Virtuoso

Dove award winning Instrumental Album of the Year. The songs really capture Phils Celtic influence. This album is deeply reflective and moving. Several songs feature orchestration, adding to the warmth of this album. Phil Keaggy, the nine-fingered virtuoso, released this acoustic tribute to C.S. Lewis in 1991 to rave reviews from guitar aficionados and to a greatly disappointed CCM audience, who had wanted to hear more of the Beatles-influenced work he had explored with Phil Keaggy & Sunday's Child and Find Me in These Fields. This is a mature work – he does not, in a Paganini fashion, write compositions solely to show off his incredible talent. This is a very musical work with beautiful pieces held together by strong craftsmanship and compositional prowess.

Axe were a British psych band led by acid-rock guitar player Tony Barford and graced by Vivienne Jones' ethereal vocals. In 1970, they recorded a demo album and this is the first ever straight reissue of this artifact, as the previous "reissue" on the Kissing Spell label was altered without the band's consent. Heavy psych and acid-rock sounds full of raw, fuzzed-out guitars and dreamy female vocals. Four original songs plus a long cover of Love's "A house is not a motel". Carefully remastered from an original copy (master tapes were lost). Includes a CD with the same album plus a bonus 8 minute video track featuring colour silent footage of Crystalline/Axe playing live in 1970 with audio from the acetate added.

Chicago, early 70s. Greg Herriges is obsessed with Lennon, 12-string guitars and far-out psychedelic sounds. Rick Vittenson is a Beach Boys-Hollies-Who fanatic who writes for Crawdaddy! magazine. Both had previously played in several garage-college bands during the 60s. With the help of studio musicians, they recorded 3 psych/power pop 45s between 1973 and 1975. All of them are featured here, taken from the master tapes along with previously unreleased studio tracks and home demos (1973-1981), plus a new song recorded in 2006.

The Herschel Trio’s debut album celebrates the music of Georg Phillip Telemann, and is released in 2017, commemorating the 250th anniversary of Telemann’s death in 1767. Telemann wrote in his autobiography that his method of composing trios involved making the second part just as important as the first, with the bass having a natural melody and harmony closely associated with the two treble parts so that every note could not be any other note than the one it was. He observed that people would often compliment him on his trios, saying they were his “special forté”. The trios in this recording, works characterized both by the composer’s eloquence and exuberance, demonstrate his special affinity both with the trio form and with the instruments for which they were composed – flute, viola gamba and harpsichord - all instruments he himself played. The title of the disc ‘A Concert near Darmstadt’ is inspired by in a mid-eighteenth century painting by the German artist Johann Christian Fiedler, which adorns the cover of the album.

The brilliant, Technicolor recordings of the Pavel Haas Quartet have won it an impressive array of awards since its inception in 2002. More will surely follow for this latest excursion into the works of Dvo ák. The playing is breathtakingly good, each performer maintaining their own personality and yet working together to conjure a special magic, whether in the sparkling furiant of the piano quintet No 2 in A major, Op 81 (with Boris Giltburg at his most mercurial), or the dreamy, song-like opening movement of the string quintet in E flat major, Op 97, redolent of the wide-open spaces of rural Iowa.

This remastering comes from the original analogue tapes and has been transferred at high resolution digital quality to capture the very best sound from the tapes. In consultation with the original engineer Chris Parker, we have slightly adjusted the balance of the Trio (in Act 3) to reflect the quality of sound that was desired but not achieved at the time of recording. This recording was originally made as a mono recording by Douglas Larter, with a stereo test version engineered by Chris Parker. It is this stereo test version which has been used for this remastering. Despite the early experimental nature of this new ‘stereo’ technology, this recording is captured in astonishingly vivid sound and is a testament to the experience, understanding and skill of both the musicians and engineers of the time.’ Simon Gibson, Remastering Engineer at Abbey Road Studios.

Keaggy is pretty much on a roll from here on out, producing album after album of great work comprised of good, solid, catchy songs that are accessible on every level, yet with enough sophistication to be appreciated by all manner of audiences. With a great band and great production, Keaggy really shines here. While still hearkening back to the '60s sound he was chasing on the previous year's Phil Keaggy & Sunday's Child, this record is more mature and full of new explorations. And littering the album in various places are little studio outtakes noted only on the sleeve with a picture of a guitar.

Under the watchful eye of famed producer Michael Cuscuna, this nine-CD set serves as a compilation of Stitt's 1950s and 1960s Roost LPs. This release also features a 28-page booklet consisting of comprehensively annotated liners. Moreover, the record label does its best to convey the artistic element via a series of black-and-white photos of Stitt and his sidemen amid anecdotes by many of the late saxophonist's affiliates. Interestingly enough, seven of the original LPs did not list personnel. In some instances, guesses were made, although most of these tracks are well-documented, thanks to the producer's diligence and painstaking research. Artists such as drummer Roy Haynes, bassist/composer Charles Mingus, and pianist Harold Maber represent but a few of Stitt's accompanists.

Odean Pope has always been about collective voices. First there was the Music Revelation Ensemble playing with Blood Ulmer, then there was his saxophone choir, and the many bands he may have named but played in as a member, not a frontperson. And here, with bassist Tyrone Brown and drummer Craig McIver, Pope is doing it again. If one listens closely to the interplay of the rhythm section in relation to Pope, it becomes clear. He could not solo in quite this way without them, nor they him. But it is in the complexity of his compositions that his true idea of collectivity is revealed. In the two takes here of "You and Me," we can hear how he creates a line and metered statement to be followed and then inverted by the rhythm section.

Psychedelic Folk, Folk Rock | Gear Fab Records #GF-212

Gear Fab's excavation of the recorded history of Greenwich Village folkie Chris Wilson continued apace with this follow-up to The Grey Wizard Am I (itself reissued three years earlier by the archival label). You needn't be a total sci-fi/fantasy dork to enjoy that 1972-vintage album, though it certainly doesn't hurt. Those with less esoteric – okay, less geeky – tastes, on the other hand, probably felt the Tolkien-themed lyricism was more than a little bit twee and precious. Even more well-adjusted, down-to-earth listeners, however, might find themselves charmed by parts of The Tin Angel. Firstly, the music itself is more diverse and, consequently, has a far broader appeal…
