Starting with their first EP, Isis has maintained their core sound, (Post Metal/Sludge) but on each subsequent EP and album have refined the sound, tuning this and changing that. Not a progressive band that jumped all over the place with wild leaps and experimenting, but truly progressing, slowly and surely up the mountain until finally reaching the summit, with this album, their magnum opus. Wavering Radiant showcases their classic sound, (more so than their last album) but this is not a throwback. Instead it features more of a soundscape feel than wall of sound. The extensive use of keyboard on this album adds a perfect touch. It plays a filler role, and is used with honest perfection…

Having taken their oppressive black metal symphonies to their furious zenith with their third effort, My Arms, Your Hearse, Sweden's Opeth began deconstructing their sound on 1999's brilliant Still Life. A logical next step in their evolution, the album finds the band re-examining their unlikely fusion of progressive rock and black metal to highlight the former while staying in touch with the latter. The result is a formidable splicing of harsh, often jagged guitar riffs with graceful melodies, and the increasing use of Mikael Åkerfeldt's "clean" vocals (alternated with his ever-present death growl)…

The title of the album has the finger pointed directly at the listener. This is about you and your relationship with humanity, ultimately the battles fought within the mind from child to man. Through Kubler Ross’ model of impending death, with reference to war, the turmoil leads us to peace and acceptance… only then to swing straight back round to chaos.

After five years, THRESHOLD are back with a brand-new studio album, recorded & produced in Thin Ice Studios (DRAGONFORCE, PENDRAGON) by Karl Groom and Richard West with additional production at Eightspace Studio (LEAGUE OF LIGHTS, THE MORNING AFTER). Progressive as always but stronger than ever - it’s not for nothing that the opus is entitled “March Of Progress”! With a total running time of almost 70(!) minutes, it marks the longest but yet most diversified release of the band’s entire career. Enchanting melodies to die for, perfectly blended with just the right pitch of harshness and topped off with Damian Wilson’s heavenly vocals. Don’t be a stick-in-the-mud - join the “March Of Progress”!

After album (or "observation," as the band likes to call them) number eight - Ghost Reveries - Opeth could have very easily coasted, merely rehashing their sound. Instead, they opted to challenge themselves and their listeners, creating an album that can - at times - expose its true nature and scope slowly and - at other times - be jarring, as if it were turning itself inside out. Opeth take chances that many bands in the same situation would be too scared to have a go at. It's hard to say if the recent membership changes affected bandleader Mikael Åkerfeldt's writing and production, or if he was enjoying his trip down classic rock (see: Deep Purple) lane…

Post-metal is often described in terms of its unyielding bleakness. The genre has long been defined by its extended passages of droning guitars, its anguished vocal roars, moments of melancholic ambience, and a commitment to experimentation and avant-garde practices over rival metal subgenres’ dalliances with “fun” (ie spandex, solos, and carefree headbanging). From Isis’ Oceanic to Aidan Baker’s Already Drowning, post-metal also has an eerie obsession with succumbing to the deadly lure of the sea. In certain ways, Philadelphia’s Rosetta plough a similar furrow. Their sixth album boasts funereal tempos and sombre soundscapes galore…

“Nine” is the second album of Swedish band Platitude. “Nine” offers everything in between AOR/melodic hard rock and progressive metal, sounds familiar, original and refreshing all at the same time, does not contain a single weak song - even bonus track “Supernova” is better than what most bands release these days - and has a sublime production by renowned knob twister Jacob Hansen.

Stockholm's most unpredictable metallic sons Opeth have offered another step on their dark journey into the Maelstrom that combines progressive sonics, and acoustic and electric instrumentation, all the while extrapolating on their now-trademark brand of death metal. Stepping aside from the malevolent acoustic elegance of 2003's Damnation without abandoning the textural advances, Ghost Reveries is a tour de force of creativity, power, and innovation. Alternately melodic and brutal, the album takes the band's progressive acumen to a new level while never abandoning the crunch…

Produced by the much sought after Jaime Gómez Arellano (Paradise Lost, Ghost) and featuring the stellar performances of Attila Csihar (Mayhem, Sunn O)))) and Kristoffer Rygg (Ulver), this album flirts elegantly with alternative rock, electronics and extreme metal to provide you with a full-bodied and unforgettable experience. A spiked cocktail of city spleen, conspiranoia and personal trauma; blue like the stagnant water in the pool of a marooned holiday resort and heavy like the silence after the next radiant apocalypse…

When Opeth released Heritage in 2011 - the wonderfully indulgent, somewhat unfocused exercise in prog rock aesthetics - some longstanding fans were offended because the band had abandoned death metal. Truthfully, they had been exploring prog in fits and starts since 2005's Ghost Reveries. Pale Communion completes the transition, proving that Heritage was not only a next step, but a new beginning altogether. Vocalist, songwriter, and guitarist Mikael Åkerfeldt has obviously been listening to loads of prog in the interim - ELP's debut, Deep Purple's In Rock, early King Crimson and Eloy, National Health, U.K., Bill Bruford's early solo work, Pär Lindh, and even jazz fusion. Produced by the singer and mixed by Steven Wilson, Pale Communion states its ambitions outright…

"The Inception of Darkness" is mixed and mastered by Tommy Hansen (Helloween; Jorn; Iron Fire; D.A.D; TNT, etc) of ‘Jailhouse Studios' in Europe. It was produced and recorded at ‘Dark Enigma Studios'. It features, for the very first time, the unique, growly, deathly vocals of Be'Lakor front man George Kosmas as guest musician and even incorporates the majestic serene female operatic vocals from Sarah Parker that are used sparingly adding to the mystique, atmosphere and power of the album. The album cover artwork is stunning and truly depicts the contents it guards. The music score ranges between all genres while still being fantastically EYEFEAR. This album truly is the band's opus, is genre defining and simply has something for everyone.
