This album was recorded in honor of the 20th anniversary of Jerry Jeff Walker's 1973 album Viva Terlingua, considered to be one of his more well known efforts. As with Viva Terlingua, ¡Viva Luckenbach! was recorded live at the same bar. The album was co-produced by Lloyd Maines, who also sits in on pedal steel guitar and dobro. If the last name is familiar, Lloyd is the father of Natalie Maines, vocalist for Dixie Chicks. This was released by Trued And True Music in association with the Rykodisc label.

The group consisted of The Undertaker, who is better known as producer Prince Paul; The Rzarector, who was better known as Prince Rakeem but primarily known for the last 23 years as The RZA; The Grym Reaper, who was better known as rapper Too Poetic (or simply Poetic); and The Gatekeeper, who is better known as Fruitkwan or Frukwan, late of the group Stetsasonic.
