This mammoth five-disc set is a wide-ranging overview of Serge Gainsbourg's career as a songwriter, composer, and arranger. It also showcases his ability to make actual singers out of actresses and models – there are a few duets here with Brigitte Bardot, and others. Those who are encountering Gainsbourg for the first time will no doubt be intimidated by this set, it is a lovely package that moves basically in chronological order; but the three-disc De Gainsbourg à Gainsbarre set is more focused and a lot more affordable.

Those habituated to ‘historical sensitivity’ in performance are likely to get the vapours from this remastered 1970 recording. All modern instruments replete with full-throated wobble, it’s a blast from the past, but nevertheless well worth the hearing for the superb imagination of the composers involved. Courbois’s Dom Quichotte is a real gem and there is much else to enjoy throughout this collection.

The operas of Grétry are seldom recorded, and even less often performed, today. The composer was for a time the personal director of music to Marie-Antoinette and there is a strong vein of pretty artificiality which can seem at best trivial in unsympathetic hands. The present recording is certainly not in such hands as Beecham had a particular liking for the music of Grétry and his contemporaries.

En Concert displays the depth and breadth of this talented group of youngsters, who gained fame in the Les Choristes film. Although the live concert is not as polished as the recording studio version of pieces from "Le Choristes" (the movie) which appear here, there is a audio presence and energy in the concert hall that the studio version lacks. Jean Baptiste Maunier, one of the stars and the soloist in the movie, shines in a number of the choral pieces here.

Rameau’s secular chamber cantatas are early works, written before he got his longed-for chance to compose for the stage. While they are clearly the works of a talented and skilled artist, it has to be admitted that they only hint at the powerful personality and individuality of the operas. Yet even that is something to be valued from someone like Rameau, and we can be glad that London Baroque have made them the subject of one of their relatively rare excursions into French repertoire.

Deux cents nuits à l'heure (Two Hundred Nights Per Hour), is a one-off collaborative album by Québec singer-songwriters Serge Fiori and Richard Séguin, released in 1978. Fiori had recently disbanded his earlier group, Harmonium, while Séguin's folk group, les Séguins (with his twin sister Marie-Claire), had also recently folded, leaving the two artists free to collaborate on this new project…

Gardiner illuminates Alceste's subtle colors and inflections, assisted by von Otter, whose perceptive performance as Alceste is one of emotional sincerity and spot-on vocal accuracy.
Despite being a watershed between baroque and classical opera - and a major influence on Mozart, Berlioz and even Wagner -Gluck (1714-87) is still best known today for one opera. Orfeo ed Euridice might be a masterpiece but it's one that has tended to overshadow his other fine achievements.

An exhilarating Carmen from Glyndebourne. Director David McVicar describes Carmen as "the first ever musical", and in his new production, with Anne Sofie von Otter in the title role, Carmen is restored to the original Opera Comique as Bizet wrote it, Philippe Jordan makes his Glyndebourne debut with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Glyndebourne Chorus.

What you get on this release by veteran countertenor Dominique Visse and the Capella de la Torre is something less accessible than what is suggested by the Vinum et Musica title but more accessible than the pedantic subtitle "Songs & dances from Nuremberg sources (15th & 16th century)." The collection of pieces here is a sort of tour of the city of Nuremberg, an important German city in Renaissance times but not one that was home to its own compositional school.

Here is one of the most underrated French albums, but also one of the most sought after, finally reissued by Musea. Visitors was actually a one-shot band gathered around producer Jean-Pierre Massiera, and including about twenty musicians. Besides the rhythm section, the stress was here put on the keyboards (Hammond organ & Mini-Moog) and on choirs that remind of Vanilla Fudge. The band performs a sophisticated music based on numerous breaks and refined developments. Let's also mention beautiful parts by Didier Lockwood's violin, who was here playing for the first time on an album. The music goes from a Yes kind of Progressive rock to elaborated Seventies British bands (Cressida, Gracious!) and to the beginnings of jazz-rock.

Originally a punk rock act influenced by the Clash and more traditional rock elements such as the Stones and Chuck Berry (under its original moniker, Tet Red, the group was known for live covers of the aforementioned artists), Têtes Raides eventually moved into more acoustic and traditional French territory (taking in more domestic influences, such as Jacques Brel and Les Négresses Verts), mixing straight-ahead rock with French music stylings from the midpoint of the 20th century.

The music of French folk troubadour Hugues Aufray existed in stark opposition to the prevailing yé-yé sound that dominated pop charts in the mid-'60s. A disciple of Bob Dylan who regularly adapted his hero's songs into French, Aufray nevertheless proved a popular favorite whose own compositions, most notably "Santiano" and "Celine," quickly entered the mainstream vernacular.
