Torga Ostera is a promising new band from central Portugal that consists of João Francisco on vocals and guitar, Jorge Marinheiro on keyboards, Eurico Moleirinho on bass and Renato Dias on drums. They describe themselves as a Space Rock-inspired band and they sure produce the goods with a blend of music that's fashioned around late-sixties and seventies British psychedelic rock and Portuguese music. The sound of their debut album is primarily based on mellow Pink Floyd inspired grooves, not unlike some of the works of ELOY and Novalis, but also modern bands like Negative Zone and Airbag, although unlike those bands, lyrics are in the band's mother tongue, where comparisons might be draw with the work of fellow Portuguese artists like Petrus Castrus, Jorge Palma or the more recent Toranja.

This is series of seriously intoxicating Latin and American Bossa-Samba-Jazz sounds! It all began in the '50s when composer Antonio Carlos Jobim, inspired by West Coast Jazz, helped to form a new music that blended together gentle Brazilian Samba rhythms and melodies with cool-toned improvising. These compilations contain the results of Jobim's influential musical experiment, as they feature a myriad of artists serving up a cocktail blend of rare original Brazilian and American Bossa Nova and Jazz from the 60's. Each volume comes complete with a different sexy vixen on each of the covers…and we do mean SEXY! Includes 80 tracks featuring classic performances by Les McCann, Mongo Santamaria, Cal Tjader, The Champs, Lalo Schifrin, Nina Simone, Stan Getz, Art Blakey, Mel Torme, Peggy Lee, Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Mann, Kenny Burrell, Mose Allison, Candido, Xavier Cugat & His Orchestra, Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66 and many more.

Cinzento is the third studio outing from Marcos Valle in two years. After the critical acclaim for 2019's disco-fied Sempre in June 2019, Valle returns to the essence of Brazilian pop and samba on Cinzento ("Gray"). The set was recorded for the independent Deck Disc and is loosely related to his classic 1973 offering Previsão Do Tempo ("Weather Forecast"). Deck label boss Roberto Ramos, who has reissued several Valle titles including Previsão Do Tempo, buttonholed the artist in 2018 and exhorted Valle to cut an album for Deck at their studios, while looking to the 1973 album for inspiration. He accepted.
Valle revisited the 1973 collaboration with Azymuth, who were still a young band, not yet the influential fusion trio they would become…

Golden-era, 1977, Brazilian jazz-funk-fusion album from the legendary, Azymuth. Lush Rhodes, soaring synths and fusion guitars from Malheiros and Bertrami combine with the inimitable drum grooves from Ivan “Mamao” Conti that create the signature Azymuth sound. The album moves from mellow soulful moods, into screaming disco-jazz-fusion, samba funk, synth boogie and ends with a tough 160bpm Batucada workout.

There were Brazilian jazz-funk records before Azymuth's 1975 self-titled offering, but none of them engaged with post-tropicalian psychedelia, MPB, samba, and disco the way this date does – so much so that the bandmembers called their music "samba doido," which translates as "crazy samba." Azymuth were formed in 1973 by José Roberto Bertrami (keyboards), Alex Malheiros (bass, guitars), and Ivan Conti (drums, percussion). All three had been active session players in the decade before. After playing some club dates and backing other musicians on-stage and in the studio, they began recording Azimüth in 1974, completing it nine months later…

Astrud Gilberto's entry in the nicely appointed Verve Jazz Masters compilation series shows exactly why the Brazilian singer is deserving of such an accolade. In her '60s heyday, Gilberto was often derided by jazz purists for her vibrato-less "desafinado" (deliberately slightly off-pitch) singing style and deadpan, childlike voice. But the diminutive bossa nova star has since been a huge influence on dozens of jazz and pop singers. VERVE JAZZ MASTERS is less of a greatest hits package than it is a smartly balanced retrospective of many of Gilberto's best performances. Her biggest hits, "Call Me" and "Summer Samba," are not included, and her signature tune, "The Girl From Ipanema," is only represented by a live take from a 1964 Carnegie Hall concert. The collection places equal emphasis on Gilberto's bossa nova-style interpretations of jazz standards and on her signature Portuguese-language sambas.

Of the early stars of MPB (música popular brasileira), Chico Buarque was one of the first to become a certifiable pop star. With his warm, nasally croon, elegant phrasing, and considerable skill at lyric writing, Buarque (who is handsome to boot) became extremely popular with women, who loved his understated sensuality. However, Buarque was uncomfortable playing the role of pop star, preferring to be seen as a serious artist. Throughout his career, he's managed to have the best of both worlds, but not without some significant bumps along the way. Still, he remains a towering figure in Brazilian pop music, one of the country's greatest singer/songwriters and interpreters of the samba.

One look at the doleful expression that Caetano Veloso wears on the cover of his third self-titled album, from 1971, and it's clear that the listener is in for a bummer. It's a dead-eyed look that says, "Friend, sit down, have a drink, and listen to my weary tale." And a weary homesick tale it is, for the man who only a few years earlier had been one of the catalysts in a revolution that sent the Brazilian music world on the psychedelic Beatles-lovin' roller coaster of Tropicalia was now living in the U.K. in a government-imposed exile. Gone are the Day-Glo flashes of his earlier albums, replaced by the realism of a revolutionary whose dreams have been shuttered.

Bossa Nova translated as the "new beat" or "the new style", grew out of Rio De Janeiro in 1958. The instigators were a handful of artists with a desire to break from tradition, developing the samba rhythms with the influence of cool American jazz to find a music with such a warm soul and natural rhythm that no-one can help but tap and sway to its beat. Bossa Nova is palm trees swaying, it is like melting sugar in hot coffee, it is the setting sun and warm sand underfoot. It is the sound and beat of Brazil, it is one of the world's coolest musical styles and it remains to this day one of the world's great musical treasures.

Blue Bossa Vol. 1. This compilation should be titled Blue Latin because it's more of a sampler of various Latin jazz styles than just a bossa nova-jazz mix. In an age of overzealous marketing and grab-bag reissues, though, the oversight is understandable. Thankfully, the misguided approach doesn't dim the quality of this very enjoyable Blue Note release. The six actual bossa nova tracks in the collection - out of 14 - range from effervescent, hard bop treatments by Hank Mobley ("Recado Bossa Nova") and Cannonball Adderly ("Sambop") to languid ballad renditions by Ike Quebec ("Loie") and Eliane Elias ("Waters of March/Agua de Beber"). The most authentic and best of the bunch is Duke Pearson's "Sandalia Dela," which spotlights Brazilian stars Airto Moreira and Flora Purim. Another standout is John Patton's B-3 organ bossa "Latona," which features inspired solos by guitarist Grant Green and vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson…

What these sound recordings attempt to do is to bring you face-to-face — or, perhaps more appropriately, sound to-heart — with actual works of the troubadours and, occasionally, of others in their circle of influence. The task is daunting for so many reasons: songs got written down decades, even centuries, after their dates of creation; only about ten percent of the original melodies survive; and most direct knowledge of how performers worked out their interpretations at the time has been lost. We know nothing whatsoever about the singing style, or about the techniques of instrumental accompaniment that may have been employed. These performances, therefore, of necessity, reflect a confluence of musicological and philological knowledge with performers' instincts and intuitions, as all of these tendencies interacted with each other at a specific moment in history, the late twentieth century.

Years go by and João Gilberto's "studio" albums are becoming increasingly rare. João voz e violão (2000), produced by Caetano Veloso, is officially and to this day the artist's last studio album. I fall back on his Ao Vivo. In 1980 the very good João Gilberto Prado de Oliveira and Live in Montreux (1987) were released. In the 90s and 2000s, several Ao Vivo albums by João Gilberto were released, including the excellent Eu Sei Que Vou Te Amar (1995). On stage, João Gilberto is faithful to the precepts of Bossa Nova: acoustic guitar without ostentatious orchestral accompaniment, muffled voice, this slight difference between voice and guitar, fairly short titles.
