This historic album recorded live an important moment in Brazil, not only in music. Two months after the military coup that instituted the dictatorship in 1964, it was realized at São Paulo's Teatro Paramount. It greatly propelled bossa's penetration in Brazil's larger city and biggest consumer market; opened the gates for Elis Regina's highly successful regular TV show under the same name; was the first time when a bossa show gathered 2,000 people; was the first professionally managed show in that movement, with all artists receiving their cachets for their presentations; and was responsible for instituting São Paulo as an important focal point for bossa, until then restricted to Rio…

Johnny Alf's sophomore LP bridges the gap between the Sinatra-inspired crooner sensibilities of his early career and the embryonic bossa nova approach of his creative heyday to forge a hip and sophisticated sound unique in the singer's catalog. Blessed with a stellar supporting cast led by pianist/arranger Celso Murillo, guitarist Neco, and bassist Luiz Marinho, Diagonal captures Alf at his most soulful, contrasting his ragged-but-right vocals against lush, string-sweetened backdrops - although a tad sentimental at times, the album's jazzy energy never flags, buoyed by the light, exotic tempo of the bossa beat.

Au tournant des années 1940, la musique populaire portoricaine se nourrit de ses origines afro-européennes, de la forte influence cubaine et de la culture découverte aux Etats-Unis par la diaspora. At the turn of the 1940s, Puerto Rican folk music was fed by its Afro-European origins, the strong Cuban influence and the culture discovered in the United States by the diaspora.

Beth Carvalho is a Brazilian singer, guitarist, cavaquinist, and composer whose name is synonymous with samba, particularly the Mangueira school. Though she began recording with Os Gatos in the mid-'60s, her run of solo albums between 1974's Pra Seu Governo and 1988's Alma Do Brasil is almost unparalleled in Brazilian MPB for their consistently high quality. She has recorded the works of now-legendary samba composers such as Nelson Cavaquinho, Guilherme de Brito, and Cartola, supporting them long before the listening public did; she assisted mightily in making them household names in Brazil…

Astrud Gilberto has never been properly anthologized by Verve Records; although they've released a number of compilations over the years, none of them have been definitive, and most of them have been rather skimpy. 1987's The Silver Collection, originally released only in Europe but later imported to North America, is an idiosyncratic selection. It omits "The Girl From Ipanema," her biggest hit, includes all 11 tracks from her 1965 release The Astrud Gilberto Album, and adds on a selection of singles and album tracks recorded from 1965 to 1970 with no particular logic. All that said, however, it's still one of the best compilations available of this idiosyncratic but brilliant singer's '60s material. Jazz purists turn up their noses at Gilberto, correctly pointing out her near total lack of technical ability. However, the Brazilian songbird's appealingly plain voice, with its deliberately wobbly pitch (the "desafinado" style celebrated in Antonio Carlos Jobim's song of that title), total lack of vibrato, and deadpan phrasing, is a delight for those attuned to its charms.

Secos & Molhados' debut album is an eccentric mashup of Brazilian folk, art pop and prog sensibilities, with frontman Ney Matogrosso and the gang blending together an invigorating mixture of influences into a product which was simultaneously undeniably Brazilian in character but at the same time celebrated a vision of Brazilian culture far from the dour conservativism of the military junta of the time. Matogrosso's startling singing voice is applied to various poems, whilst the musical backing reminds me at points of Audience on a Brazilian vacation. Add an injection of glam androgyny and you get a feast just as rich as the one on the cover.

In “Vesúvio”, Djavan presents us with 12 songs, in addition to a bonus track recorded with Jorge Drexler, all full of love, politics and the power of nature. Djavan has been doing samba for more than 40 years;Orquídea , for 16. His sambas are known by the public, who love and admire them since the artist’s premiere as a songwriter in “Fato consumado”, 1975. “Orquídea” is the title of a samba in “Vesúvio” (Luanda Records/Sony Music), Djavan’s 24th album, which will be released on Nov. 23. It joins both his passions. Actually, samba is an exception in “Vesúvio”. Djavan is an explorer of melodies as much as he is of flowers, and to both passions he dedicates the same devotion. It is, in a simple and unmistakable definition, a pop album.

Lóki?, released in 1974, was the first solo effort of former Os Mutantes member Arnaldo Baptista. Probably reflecting Baptista's own mood and feelings at the time, this album is decidedly slower, darker, and more melancholic than the Os Mutantes albums ever were. The lyrics are often quite sad and confused, though it has to be said that on several occasions Baptista shows that he had preserved his sense of humor from the Os Mutantes years. Musically, Lóki? is dominated by Baptista's typical way of singing and his excellent piano playing (similar to Elton John during his glory years in the '70s). Six out of the first seven tracks are really good…

This two-CD sampler is most highly recommended for listeners not familiar with Stan Getz's recordings of the 1950s and '60s. Starting with a version of "Stella by Starlight" that co-stars guitarist Jimmy Raney, this set matches Getz's cool tenor with such artists as trumpeters Dizzy Gillespie and Conte Candoli, trombonist J.J. Johnson, baritonist Gerry Mulligan, pianists Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans and Chick Corea, valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer and vibraphonist Gary Burton. Also included are his two main bossa nova hits "Desafinado" and "The Girl from Ipanema" along with a couple of tracks from Getz's highly-rated Focus album. It's a fine overview of the great tenor's middle years.

Amanda Brecker is a talented singer/songwriter and daughter of trumpeter Randy Brecker and pianist/singer Eliane Elias. Her debut CD from 2008 Here I Am became an instant hit in Japan, and her sophomore release Brazilian Passion earned the coveted status of Swing Journal Gold Disc. Her third album Blossom was a bit of a departure, it being a tribute to Carole King and James Taylor. Like the third album, Amanda's latest release Way To Be was produced by Jesse Harris, the singer-songwrither and producer who's known for his association with Norah Jones. The music on this album can be described as jazzy pop with strong Brazilian flavors. The supporting musicians include two Brazilians (Joao Pedro Mourao on guitar and Mauro Refosco on drums and percussion), Los Angeles-based guitarist Anthony wilson, and New York-based keyboardist Sam Barsh. The eclectic program includes six originals by Amanda and Harris, a few songs by contemporary singer-songwriters, Eliane Elias' tune "Running" and Antonio Carlos Jobim's classic "Waters of March".

Black Orpheus the film by Marcel Camus, and its soundtrack, were the signposts by which the world first learned of samba and bossa nova and fell in love with it. Therefore, it is staggering to consider that it took until 2008 for a definitive edition of the soundtrack to be released, one that assembled all the songs and music heard in the film. After all, this is the score that created the partnership of composer Antonio Carlos Jobim and poet Vinicius de Moraes, and introduced the brilliant and influential guitarist Luiz Bonfá. Universal France has assembled all the sound recordings into one 17-track volume. These include the two original 45 EPs, and the 10" 33 rpm album, as well as some tracks that have never appeared before now…

Legendary Brazilian singer and activist. Her inventive style interpreting classic bossas and sambas justice have made her a national icon.
Owner of a distinctive, harsh voice, Elza Soares is one of the most swinging samba singers. From the time she issued her debut single - "Se Acaso Você Chegasse" in 1959, and on which she introduced scat singing à la Louis Armstrong, to samba - she became a successful recording artist. Her second album, A Bossa Negra, from 1961, is considered a treasure of Brazilian music at home and abroad. With her voice and songs, Soares has always celebrated the gritty aspects of peasant life…
