Issued nearly a year after Jobim's death, this three-CD set is ground zero, the place to start if you don't have any Jobim in your collection or for anyone who wants a single package of his multifaceted art. The set encompasses not only Jobim's own sporadic work for Verve from 1963 until his final 1994 Carnegie Hall concert and the two A&M albums of 1967 and 1970, but also sessions led by Stan Getz, Joao, and Astrud Gilberto in which Jobim appeared as a sideman. Guitarist Oscar Castro-Neves, who selected the music for this set, follows a unique game plan, devoting disc one to vocal renditions of Jobim's songs, disc two to instrumental versions, and disc three to multiple comparisons of a few Jobim standards by different performers…

Exalted as "The George Gershwin of Brazil," Antonio Carlos Jobim was an incredibly prolific composer who wrote many songs that became standards in Brazilian and jazz circles. But in fact, Jobim also composed many great songs that aren't standards, and on this absorbing CD, Ana Caram insightfully spotlights some of the Jobim pearls that aren't nearly as well known as "The Girl From Ipanema," "Triste" or "Corcovado." Indeed, The Other Side of Jobim underscores the fact that for every "Desafinado" or "One Note Samba" he wrote, there was a lesser-known treasure like "Ana Luiza," "Olha Maria" or "Esperanca Perdida." Even those with an extensive knowledge of Brazilian music may not be familiar with "Correnteza" or "Demais," but as Caram obviously realizes, they certainly deserve to be.

After saluting Antonio Carlos Jobim's lesser-known songs on The Other Side of Jobim, Ana Caram turned to his more famous work with equally splendid results on Bossa Nova. Jobim had recently died when she recorded the CD in January 1995, and the singer/guitarist felt that another tribute was in order. While Other Side purposely avoided standards, Bossa Nova is full of them. Anyone with even a casual knowledge of Brazilian pop-jazz and the bossa nova will be familiar with such standards as "The Girl From Ipanema," "Agua de Beber" and "Chega de Saudade." But while Caram's choices may be obvious, her treatment of them isn't. From "O Pato" to "Double Rainbow," everything on Bossa Nova sounds personal and individualistic rather than cliched.

Initially Luedji intended to continue along the path of her parents' political work and graduated in Law. But she also studied music at the Federal University of Bahia, and ultimately its lure proved too strong. She moved to São Paulo where in 2016 she released the single “Um Corpo No Mundo” (body in the world). YouTube popularity ensured an album would follow, and in 2017 this provided her with a further hit in the Axé (pronounced ashé) styled “Banho De Folhas” (bath of leaves). With its distinctive African guitar motive, courtesy of guitarist François Muleka, it became popular among DJs, and at last count has received four official remixes.

A great album from Astrud Gilberto – one that has her pushing past the simple bossa of early years, running through a range of 60s styles that all sound great – really opening up, finding new confidence in her vocals, and bridging a few different musical worlds in the process! There's still plenty of Brazilian tunes in the mix – like "Oba, Oba", "Canoeiro", "Bossa Na Praia", "Nao Bate O Corocao", and Marcos Valle's great "The Face I Love" – and the album also features great versions of "Misty Roses", "You Didn't Have To Be So Nice", and "Stay". Backings are by Deodato and Don Sebesky – and the album's a dreamy 60s pop delight!

AMAZONIA is an animal feature film for which we wanted neither narration nor dialogues.

Not counting reissues, the last time we heard from singer and songwriter Marcos Valle was on 2010's brilliant Estática. During the 1970s and '80s, the original Brazilian beach boy (now a "beach grandfather" at 76) was globally infamous for his trademark brand of party music woven from disco, electro-boogie, jazz-funk, and samba. Co-produced, arranged, and mixed by Daniel Maunick, Sempre is an unapologetic return to elements of that groove-conscious sound wed to contemporary production. His all-star backing musicians here include Azymuth bassist Alex Malheiros (responsible for many of Brazil's funkiest low-end pyrotechnics), a horn section that includes Valle's longtime trumpeter Jesse Sadock, saxophonist Marcelo Martins, and trombonist Paulinho Guitarra, as well as the dazzling percussion talents of Armando Marcal, who has worked with everyone from Paul Simon and Pat Metheny to Ivan Lins and João Bosco.

Back in 1964, saxophonist Stan Getz made one of those perfect albums. He teamed up with famed Brazilian songwriters and guitarists, Joao Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim, and delivered one of the best records in his career: Gezt/Gilberto (Verve, 1964). The combination of the wistfully vibrant bossa nova and the sensual saxophone sound of Getz proved to be irresistible. History has a way of repeating itself and now it is time for yet another crucial meeting between a group of Brazilian musicians and an American saxophonist. Harry Allen could be considered one of the most prominent heirs to the sound of Getz, so it was only a matter of time before he would find the ideal partner to make an album with a perfect Brazilian sound. In fact, his partner found him. In the elaborate notes to the album Something About Jobim, producer and bassist, Rodolfo Stroeter, tells the story of the album. When his good friend, record producer Søren Friis of Stunt Records, gave him a bunch of records to listen to, one of them especially caught his attention.

Walter Wanderley's debut album 'O Samba É Mais Samba' was released in Argentina as 'El Samba Es Mas Samba Con Walter Wanderley', the North American market named this LP as 'Walter Wanderley's Brazilian Organ', and a second release in US made it as 'From Rio With Love'. Wanderley was known for his distinctive staccato stuttering style and mastery of the Hammond B-3 organ and on later recordings and during live concerts a L Series Hammond. Walter Wanderley was already famous in his native country Brazil in the late 1950s and became an internationally renowned star in the mid-1960s through his collaboration with the singer Astrud Gilberto.
