Violin’s golden age at the dawn of the 20th century saw virtuoso players Fritz Kreisler and Jascha Heifetz conquer the concert halls, and witnessed the heady music of Gershwin, Debussy, Satie, Bruch, and company. Ray Chen’s programme places Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 at its center, in a performance of lyrical sweetness, velvet tone, and fierce virtuosity. Surrounding the Concerto, however, are charming salon pieces by Kreisler and Cyril Scott plus four enticing miniatures played by Chen and quartet Made in Berlin, including “A New Satiesfaction,” a play on the music of Erik Satie, with nods to Rossini and Grieg. To finish, a tribute to Chen’s Australian roots in the form of a riotous arrangement of “Waltzing Matilda”.

Inspired by a general love of the tango, and more specifically the tango of Astor Piazzolla, on the part of Yo-Yo Ma, the Soul of the Tango album is a masterful work of the nuevo tango, played by Ma's cello and many of Piazzolla's former associates. Piazzolla's old guitarists Sergio and Odair Assad even showed up to work on a pair of tracks arranged by Sergio: the Tango Suite (consisting of Andante and Allegro). The sheer beauty of one of Piazzolla's tangos is generally enough to warrant the purchase of an album involving them. An album such as this one, where all of the songs (save one: Tango Remembrances, where Ma plays along with outtakes from Piazzolla's recording of The Rough Dancer and the Cyclical Night album) are compositions by Piazzolla is even better. Add to this the masterful playing of Ma, and the surprising facility in which the cello fits into the tango, and you've got what could become a classic album, if only it weren't on the classical label from Sony.

This final installment in Hyperion's cycle of the complete songs of Richard Strauss contains a miscellany of material, with the expected positive and negative results. The best news comes at the end, with the inclusion of Strauss' orchestral Vier letzte Lieder (Four Last Songs) in piano transcriptions by Max Wolff and Ernst Roth (the latter in the really sublimely done Im Abendrot, which, if you sample the final pages, might rightly persuade you to shell out for the whole album).

Truls Mørk, you have to admit, is a very cool name for a cellist. A native of Norway, Mørk is a cellist whose tone ranges from intimate pianissimos to immense fortissimos without ever losing its essential combination of passionate lyricism and cool lucidity, a cellist whose interpretations range from blissful joy to endless despair without every losing its fundamental balance of total dedication and cool objectivity, a cellist, in short, who lives up to his name.

Mozart’s darkest operatic masterpiece with a superb cast featuring Renée Fleming and Bryn Terfel, masterfully conducted by James Levine with Franco Zeffirelli’s beautiful staging.
Bryn Terfel, giving his first Don Giovanni at the MET, received rave reviews for both his singing and his dramatic performance – as the Los Angeles Times puts it: “Terfel is exquisite as the Don, raping and pillaging his way through Europe: His voice, diction and acting are perhaps the best in the role since Cesare Siepi.”
