The aphorism attributed to Pablo Picasso is perfectly suited to the spirit of this album, an expressive experience in which the performers try their hand at transcribed pieces, originally designed for other organists, for timbres not belonging to the sound sphere that is heard in this work. Why steal and transcribe original music written for string orchestra, oboe, keyboard adaptations of orchestral compositions? The answer is simple and lies in the enhancement of the universal works of art contained between the lines of the original staves.

Almost every one of Peter Gabriel’s best-laid plans winds up going awry, and so it was with Scratch My Back, his 2010 collection of orchestral covers of some of his favorite songs. He had hoped to have the artists he covered return the favor by interpreting his songs but that project never got off the ground, so he pursued New Blood, an album where he turned that orchestra upon his own songs. New Blood is in every way a companion piece to Scratch My Back; it’s cut from the same aesthetic cloth, it's austere and cerebral without being chilly, it finds emotion within intellect.

Michaels Reise originally was composed for large orchestra and could be called a trumpet concerto. In the version on this CD, it is a chamber piece. Rehearsals and recording were done together with the composer, the quality of both the performance and the sound are fantastic. It is maybe the most accessible of all Stockhausen compositions. Beautiful melodies (or, as Stockhausen calls them, formulas) can be heard. They are exchanged between the leading trumpet and other instruments.

In his liner-notes to Hermann Max’s C.P.E Bach oratorio Die Auferstehung und Himmelfahrt Jesu the German musicologist Peter Wollny writes: "In the second half of the eighteenth century the German oratorio was marked by two characteristics. The tendency toward a highly individual depiction of emotions and the avoidance of dramatic operatic plots." Therefore composers turned away from stories from the Old Testament which were so successfully used, for instance, by Handel for his dramatic oratorios, and focused rather on the person of Jesus Christ. Bach's oratorio Die Israeliten in der Wüste seems to contradict this statement.

The composition of a ninth symphony has represented a symbolic challenge within the tradition for almost every composer after Beethoven. Andrzej Panufnik met this challenge with his most ambitious and large-scale work.
It was supposed to be a choral symphony, but Panufnik decided against this: ‘The Sinfonia di Speranza reflects my musical interpretation of the ideal of hope: within its notes I have tried to incorporate a spiritual message, an expression of my faith in mankind as well as my longing for racial and religious tolerance among all people’.

cpo’s Andrzej Panufnik Symphonic Works series has been met with great critical acclaim. The fifth volume in this series sees the young Polish conductor Lukasz Borowicz leading the larger forces of the Berlin Concert Orchestra in fine interpretations of the Polish-English composers’ popular Symphonies 7 and 8 and Concerto Festivo. Symphony No. 7 ‘Metasinfonia’ for organ, timpani and strings is dedicated to the Black Madonna of Czestochowa, the symbol of independence for Polish people. Symphony No. 8 ‘Votiva’ is one of Panufnik’s most-performed works.

During the 18th century it became common for Italian composers, whose principal instrument was not the keyboard, to produce collections of harpsichord music. It was, effectively, a chance to demonstrate versatility and bring one’s music to a wider audience, and Geminiani was one of several musicians to embrace this: hailed as one of the great violin virtuosos of his time, he also enjoyed a fruitful career as a composer, teacher and writer of music, and in 1743 published the first of his two contributions to the keyboard repertoire – Pièces de Clavecin.

Claudio Arrau recorded these concertos twice for Philips, the present performances in 1963, and then again in 1980 with Colin Davis and the Boston Symphony. There's very little to choose between them. Tempos are almost identical, and contrary to what one might expect, the slow movement of the Schumann concerto is actually a bit faster in the later version. Arrau's way with the music is wholly characteristic of the man: serious, even reverential (at the beginning of the Schumann), and played with drop-dead gorgeous tone. The result enhances the stature of both works, but the Grieg in particular. The climax of the finale has an epic grandeur without a hint of bombast that you simply won't find in any other performance. Dohnányi's accompaniments are also distinguished: he lets Arrau lead but isn't afraid to permit the orchestra to assert itself where necessary; and of course the playing of the Concertgebouw is top-notch. If you haven't heard Arrau in this music, it really doesn't matter which of his recordings you wind up with, but do try to get at least one of them.

Alicia de Larrocha has been playing these works, the greatest in the repertoire of Spanish piano music, all her life – one of her very first recordings, 40 years ago, was of some of the Goyescas, and I had the pleasure of welcoming her first Iberia ten years after that (10/65); and immersed as she was from her earliest childhood in the authentic tradition (her mother, her aunt and she herself were all trained at Granados’s own school, of which she later became director), she has several times been asked to re-record them. She once said, rather wistfully, that she didn’t consider herself a specialist but that Spanish music was what the public constantly demanded of her. One can sympathize with her if she feels inescapably cast in this mould – but then she shouldn’t be so wonderfully persuasive in it! She employs plenty of subtle rubato but possesses the ability to make it sound as natural as breathing; yet she can also preserve a stimulating tautness of rhythm.

Grainger’s mastery of choral textures shines out of this wide-ranging collection of folk-song arrangements, each highly individual and memorable. Plus his friend Grieg’s finely scored religious settings. Superior performances by Stephen Layton and Polyphony.

“…Through its inherent openness, Bach's keyboard music has become something of a musical mirror for different generations of pianists in the modern age, clearly reflecting the tastes and values of each time. While some works go in and out of vogue, others enjoy a stable popularity but undergo radical changes in the way they are understood and interpreted. Bach today generally sounds quite different from Bach 30 years ago, and still more different than Bach 50 years ago. In that sense his music is contemporary rather than classical. It has the potential to feel more or less as new today as it did 300 years ago…” (Víkingur Ólafsson)

Gebel, who isn’t mentioned in any of the current music encyclopedias, clearly proves–on evidence of this very fine Passion–that he was worthy of acclaim (confirmed by various contemporaty sources) and was capable of original ideas and possessed the creative resources to write music of sustained drama and interest. While this passion setting is nowhere near as powerfully affecting in either the spiritual or theatrical sense as those of Bach, it does offer consistently appealing and emotionally meaningful musical realizations, spread among numerous arias, choral movements, and chorales. Gebel also was quite adept at colorful scoring, exemplified in his fascinating combinations of instruments such as horns, oboe, bassoon, violins (often pizzicato), and theorbo (highlighted in a solo during one of the arias late in the work).
