To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Janáček’s birth, this Decca Collector Edition brings together most of the composer’s chamber works and solo pieces plus his most popular orchestral works and the magnificent Glagolitic Mass in a superb digital recording with Riccardo Chailly and Wiener Philharmoniker. The recordings of the solo works and chamber pieces feature one of the world’s most distinguished ensembles: the London Sinfonietta and David Atherton. Their recordings were originally released as a 5-LP set in 1981 and many of these performances have not been available for several years; many also make their first international appearance on CD. This set provides the listener with all the essential non-operatic Janáček in one convenient collection.

The greatest of Mozart's wind serenades and the toughest of Alban Berg's major works might seem an unlikely pairing, but in an interview included with the sleeve notes for this release, Pierre Boulez points up their similarities. Both works are scored for an ensemble of 13 wind instruments (with solo violin and piano as well in the Berg) and both include large-scale variations as one of their movements - and Boulez makes the comparisons plausible enough in these lucid performances. It's rare to hear him conducting Mozart, too, and if the performance is a little brisker and more strait-laced than ideal, the EIC's phrasing is a model of clarity and good taste. It's the performance of the Berg, though, that makes this such an important issue; both soloists, Mitsuko Uchida and Christian Tetzlaff, are perfectly attuned to Boulez's approach - they have given a number of performances of the Chamber Concerto before - and the combination of accuracy and textural clarity with the highly wrought expressiveness that is the essence of Berg's music is perfectly caught.

”The sort of musical talent Zoltán Kocsis displays is something we’re blessed with maybe once or twice a century. It is a priceless treasure that we should take good care of!” – writes György Kroó, an influential music critic of his time on 21 March 1970 about the then 18-year-old young musician. The quotation clearly illustrates the extent of professional interest in Kocsis’ achievements already in the early days of his career, and the expectations kept rising only to put a heavy burden and responsibility on the pianist. Many others have been seen to collapse under such pressure.

Then Somis appeared on the scene. He was possessed of the finest and most majestic bow stroke in Europe. He overcame limits which foiled others and avoided the pitfalls into which others fell [] A single bow stroke lasted so long that the mere remembrance of it causes one to hold ones breath; it seemed like a taut silk thread which, in order to preserve the purity of tone, was festooned with silver and filigree gold mixed with diamonds, rubies, garnets and above all pearls.

It’s no wonder that a pianist with such a large sonic vision of her own instrument has an orchestral way of imagining sound and sonic associations, with her dedications to both the solo and the large ensemble formats complementing each other. Unexpected could be her interest to the song imprint and the voice (here delivered to the singers Bjork Nielsdottir and Laura Polence), because the impulse to work with it comes from other concerns and interests, but the Slovenian artist values timbre and acoustic quality in a special way: her love for vocal music is understandable.

Don’t be put off by the title: this is wonderful music, and all the words indicate is that the pieces can be used in church or court… what you get in these 12 sonatas is the music of gesture: sweeping roulades, folksy melodies, plangent fanfares. Fiercely incisive playing from Ars Antiqua, the six strings led by Gunar Letzbor, and unforced accuracy from the trumpets.

Sarah Brightman's The Songs That Got Away delivers what the title promises: a collection of 14 of Brightman's favorite songs that are more obscure to the general public. These little-known show tunes include works by Irving Berlin, Leonard Bernstein, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, Noël Coward, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and other great songwriters, making this album worthwhile not only for Brightman fans, but musical theater historians as well.

Given the increasing number of shared releases by Jonny Nash and Suzanne Kraft, it was probably inevitable that the pair would eventually join forces in the studio. Predictably, this first collaborative album for Nash's Melody as Truth label is a woozy, intricate and evocative ambient treat. Largely built around plucked notes of Nash's guitar, blissful synthesizer lines and occasional heartfelt piano flourishes, it largely feels like a cross between 1970s ambient material and more contemporary beat-less electronica. In other words, it combines elements familiar from their separate solo project to present something that sums up both artists' approach to ambient composition.

This Rigoletto, filmed live at the Zurich Opera House in 2006, has three strong leads to recommend it. In the title role, Leo Nucci fully represents all of Rigoletto’s character traits and range of emotions—the hunchback’s lancing wit, fearfulness, and self-loathing when we first meet him and later, his obsessive need for revenge. Both Rigoletto’s sense of righteous triumph when he believes he’s got the Duke dead in the bag and his inconsolable grief at the drama’s end are palpable.

Thanks to his exceptional talent as a clarinetist, the Finnish-born composer Bernard Henrik Crusell made it very quickly from his home village, Uusikaupunki, to the metropolis of Stockholm, where he spent the rest of his life, mainly as a member of the orchestra of the Swedish Royal Court. His travels brought him to Berlin, Dresden, Leipzig and Paris, cities in whcih he made the acquaintance of many great musicians and instrument builders. His works for the clarinet were widely known in the musical circles of the first part of the 19th century.

When Nicky Spence was first shown the score to The Boy in the Train , the last of Buxton Orr's Songs of a Childhood, he was transported to the late 1980s his own childhood in Scotland. Something about Buxton's sense of humour, excitement and honesty resonated with me, Spence says, and fed my desire to discover more about his work. On contacting his widow, I was led to a treasure trove of unrecorded works for voice.

One of China’s leading contemporary composers, Jia Daqun has often drawn on the traditional music of his native country. Flavour of Bashu derives its themes from Sichuan opera with its astringency, rhythmic uncertainty and distinctive piquancy. The Prospect of Coloured Desert is one of his best-loved works, composed for Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Project. Counterpoint of Times is a chamber concerto of fascinating complexity, whilst the String Quartet has been enriched with folk tunes and vivid performing techniques.

Beethoven's friend Louis Spohr was one of the most significant symphonists of his day and his nine works in the genre divide fairly evenly into those which follow classical traditions and four which have titles. Symphony No. 4 in F major, Op. 86 is subtitled Die Weihe der Töne (The Consecration of Sound) and is a programmatic work, based on an eponymous poem by Carl Pfeiffer, that offers both a novel symphonic form and a powerful musical narrative. Spohr was also a hugely influential figure in the development of German opera, as the two overtures clearly demonstrate.
