Born in Lebrija, in the cradle of flamenco, Inés Bacán belongs to one of these great flamenco dynasties where we find almost all the most famous artists of the cante. Descending from the mythical Pinini, she is the niece of Fernanda and Bernarda de Utrera, the cousin of El Lebrijano and Pedro Peña and, of course, the sister of Pedro Bacán. It was the latter who had encouraged her to go on stage and to make the public discover her mastery of the basic styles of the gypsy flamenco singing that she interpreted until then only in the intimacy of family celebrations. "In my family if you did not sing well or were not funny (graciosa), no one paid you the least attention, and I was not funny," Ines said, Conversation with oneself that others can also understand

Cherubini’s major sacred works are generally quite marvelous. The two Requiems have a distinguished history on disc. Toscanini recorded the C minor, Markevitch the D minor, and my colleague David Vernier praised the recent release of the C minor piece on Carus. They are both truly excellent: grave and austere, but also dynamic, moving, and well worth hearing. The same is certainly true of the large-scale Masses: the Missa solemnis in D minor and E major and the Mass in F are especially memorable. Their grandeur never strains for effect and is always leavened with the composer’s Italian lyricism. Cherubini may not have been well-treated by history, but he knew what he was doing.

Tigran Hamasyan's new album, An Ancient Observer, is due March 31 on Nonesuch Records. Ahead of the release of the album, his second on the label, Hamasyan will begin a world tour, starting with three consecutive nights at the Blue Whale in Los Angeles, February 25–27. An Ancient Observer's songs—two of which are based on Armenian melodies—were written over the last four years. Some of the pieces are through-composed and completely written out, while others are composed with ample space for Hamasyan to improvise. Many include vocals layered into the mix. As with most of his compositions, Hamasyan cites a wide range of influences, from Baroque dance to hip-hop, with pedals connected to a synthesizer on a few tracks—while the sounds of his native country also are present, as always.

This disc of Mozart's opera arias manages to capture the perfection of Kathleen Battle's first disc of Mozart concert arias conducted under Previn. We are accorded the opportunity and privilege to hear Ms. Battle essay characters that she never did in the opera house, Constanze, Cherubino, and the Countess among them. In "Porgi amor," the CD's opening track, she negotiates the long passages of the Countess' aria with seeming ease. Hers is a smaller voice than we are used to hearing in the role but this is unimportant as her vocal acting is superb, bringing the heartache housed in the libretto fully to life…

This live recording of Georg Philipp Telemann's "Flavius 'Bertaridus" is a rarity: The performance at the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music has been hailed by critics and frenetic. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung described this world premiere recording under the direction of Alessandro di Marchi - one of the leading specialists in historical performance practice. As "a milestone in German music history," "Not a single scene, no aria want to miss it," the Neue Zürcher Zeitung writes to di Marchis spectacular interpretation with orchestra and chorus of the Academia Montis Regalis. The opera is entirely filled with wonderful singers like Maite Beaumont, Ann-Beth Solvang and Nina Bernstein.

Cardiff singer of the world competition winner Tommi Hakala, baritone, Pia Freund, soprano and Kristian Attila, piano, perform Sibelius “hits” that have become especially dear to them. Examples are Säv, säv susa (Sigh, Rushes, Sigh), Illalle (To Ilta) and Var det en dröm? (Was it a Dream?). Some of the songs are truly rare; these include En visa (A Song), which despite its serious message shows a very exceptional, relaxed and jovial Sibelius. It is also the first Lied he allowed to be published, and it dates from 1888. Examples of songs that are interesting in an unusual way are Marssnön (The March Snow), which comes very close to a Scandinavian folk song, and I natten (In the Night), with its simply evocative and impressionistic moods.

At the beginning of the twentieth century the American William Humphreys Dayas (1864-1903) was the leading professor of piano at the Royal Manchester College of Music. He was an important figure: he studied with Liszt, was friends with Busoni and became a major pedagogue, holding teaching posts in Helsinki, Wiesbaden and Cologne before he came to Manchester in 1895. Although Dayas left only a handful of compositions, two of them are major organ sonatas - passionate, Lisztian works that have remained completely unknown until now. Dayas also arranged for organ the Thème varié for piano four hands by another forgotten American composer, Arthur H. Bird (1856-1923), a further important addition to the late-Romantic organ repertoire. Dr Jan Lehtola is one the most successful and progressive Finnish organists of his generation. He has appeared with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Tapiola Sinfonietta, the Lahti Symphony, Tampere Philharmonic and Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestras and the St Michael Strings.

Back another two centuries, to 1640 and a late masterpiece by the first great figure in opera history: Claudio Monteverdi and his Il ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria – “The Return of Ulysses to his Homeland”. Raymond Leppard conducted a production at Glyndebourne in the early 1970s, based on his own edition of the textually problematic work – there are gaps in the only surviving score. Revived in 1979, the production – which has gone down in the annals of opera legend – was recorded by CBS. Gramophone’s reviewer declared the performance “gloriously vivid in humanity and splendour.

The thrilling contrasts in a composer’s oeuvre are presented here by violinist Marie Radauer-Plank and pianist Henrike Brüggen, who bring the world of the great Karol Szymanowski to life. His music reflects the spirit of his time while drawing inspiration from ancient sources, deriving its power from the traditions of his homeland while remaining universal. This can all be heard in the playing of the two young, international prize-winning musicians: sophisticated yet down-to-earth, incredibly sensual yet clearly structured.

Some of the Italian musicians who came to London to ‘make their fortunes’ found themselves influenced by the Celtic lands and their rich tradition of folk music. They were in their turn admired and sometimes even copied by their counterparts in the British Isles. This recording shows the outcome of that encounter. Lorenzo Bocchi was probably the first Italian cellist to settle in Edinburgh, in 1720. Francesco Geminiani (1687-1762) arrived in Dublin in 1733. Since 1714 he had been resident in London, where he performed with Handel, but his passion for art dealing landed him in prison.

Even with 15 other versions of Rimsky's masterpiece of orchestral virtuosity to choose from — some in the top flight — this was recognized from the first as one of the most rewarding, thanks largely to Krebbers's exceptionally sweet, gently appealing and bewitching personification of the story - spinning Scheherazade and to Kondrashin's skill in pacing and shaping movements as a whole, relating the diverse tempos and building up tension and dynamics by careful control so as to create climaxes of thrilling intensity and power. the 'shipwreck' finale, in particular, was overwhelming; and this was achieved without resorting to the ultra - fast tempos adopted by some conductors to whip up excitement. The Concertgebouw's crisp, sonorous and sensitive playing (full marks both to the splendid strings and to the wind soloists) was caught with the utmost fidelity; but the Compact Disc's total exclusion even of minimal extraneous background now marks a still further improvement, as can be judged by the dead silence against which Scheherazade's pleadings are heard. The final coda is ravishingly beautiful.
