It was first released in April 1963 on Ava; then Bernstein re-recorded it in the 1970s for his Film Music Collection series; and finally, he recorded the complete score (below) in 1996 with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra for the Varese Sarabande Film Classics series.

I started to become fascinated with composer Charles Valentin Alkan when I was very young. The groundwork was laid by my teacher Rainer M. Klaas, whose curiosity and commitment in favor of a seldom-performed and unjustly forgotten repertoire I still regard as an unrivaled source of inspiration. Klaas played a decisive role. At a time when few had ever listened to Alkan’s music or had even heard the composer’s name, I had already assimilated and learned to appreciate many of Alkan’s works thanks to his teaching. My brother Shafagh had also cultivated an interest in Alkan and performed several of his pieces. I found a further source of inspiration in pianist Marc-André Hamelin, who recorded Alkan’s piano music in an unprecedented quality and helped make them known to a much wider audience.

Here we present a new installment in the complete recording cycle of Dvorák's Symphonic Works with the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie, containing not only the symphonies but also rarely recorded opera ouvertures of the Czech composer. The new chief conductor of the orchestra, Finnish maestro Pietari Inkinen, continues the Dvorák Cycle begun under the baton of Karel Mark Chichon. In September 2017 Pietari Inkinen became Chief Conductor of the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbruecken. Inkinen is also Chief Conductor of the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, a post he has held since the beginning of the 16-17 season. He has also been Chief Conductor of the Prague Symphony Orchestra since 2015.

Franz Joseph Haydn's Die Schöpfung (The Creation) is one of the greatest oratorios, beloved for its moving religious content and admired for its abundant melodies, stirring choruses, imaginative scene-painting, and colorful orchestration. An argument can be made that period instrumentation and historically informed performance practices give a real boost to Haydn's scoring and effects, in ways conventional modern ensembles can't, and experts in early music make it especially striking by employing the sonorities the composer would have known and wanted.

For his first CD, the Lutetia orchestra has chosen to bring together two major figures of French and Argentine music. Two countries, two composers, two worlds directly linked to the influences that rocked his conductor Alejandro Sandler. The dream and the earth are the clever mix between Debussy's delicate sound palette and Ginastera's lyrical nervousness. The journey between two worlds linked to each other, which everything separates and brings together. Debussy's three selected works are both distinct and yet closely related. Symbolist and impressionist, Debussy was very early on rich and varied in his compositions from the first part of his creative life. The Estancia suite reveals in energetic and nostalgic terms the harsh life of the nomadic Gauchos in the wild plains of Argentina. Through a version that is intended to be descriptive and subjective, the Lutetia orchestra wanted to highlight what was the true life of an Argentine gaucho in the middle of the 19th century. They have kept the impressionist colours of the Argentine literary work that inspired the sequel: the "Martin Fierro".

Set during the Second World War, this live recording of Ermione opened the Rossini Opera Festival in 2008. An exceptional vocal cast, in particular Sonia Ganassi in the title role, described by David Blewitt in The Stage as “deploy[ing] an astonishing vocal armoury to searing effect. Her fury during the Act I finale is hair-raising”. This production sees a collaboration between cousins Roberto and Daniele Abbado, nephew and son respectively of celebrated conductor Claudio Abbado.

Too much ink has been spilt on this Clemenza di Tito supposedly composed in 18 days and which, so it is said, was conspicuously out of step with the times in 1791 . . . The interpretation offered here by René Jacobs is nothing short of revolutionary. Not only does it rehabilitate the original score in its entirety, notably the recitatives: it also restores the powerfully classical inspiration so essential to opera seria. In the final years of the Enlightenment, this was still the favoured genre of the educated man, and it is sheer delight to hear the language of Metastasio beginning to sing once more. As if magic, La clemenza suddenly springs to new and exciting life.

“This first volume in the complete cycle must already be given pride of place in the discography,” declared Classica Magazine upon the release of Prokofiev’s Sonatas nos. 2, 6, and 8 (awarded a ‘Choc’ in 2016). With this new volume, Alexandre Melnikov has chosen to delve into three distinct periods of the composer’s career, ranging from the dazzling though seldom-heard No. 4 to the magisterial No. 9. In between those two, the sonata no. 7 once again evokes the troubled atmosphere characteristic of the three so-called ‘war sonatas’. Sviatoslav Richter claimed to have learned the piece in a mere four days.

Nelson Freire is one of the piano’s true greats. Born in 1944 in Boa Esperança, Brazil, Freire gave his first public recital at the age of five. From there, nothing seemed to stop him. Major competition prizes and studies with legendary teachers shaped him into a thoughtful musician possessing a rare sensitivity and a dynamic range envied by his fellow pianists. In this recording celebrating 70 years on the concert stage, Freire pays homage to some of the most renowned pianists of the early 20th century, including fellow Brazilian Guiomar Novaes, the extraordinary virtuoso Leopold Godowsky, and the magisterial Arthur Rubinstein. But he also takes us back in time to his childhood, and pieces that captivated the young Nelson and sent him on his way. Here, he guides us through the works he’s chosen to play.

In 1991 Brendel and the Berliners wee headliners at the Proms in London, wowing the huge Bank Holiday crowd with this Brahms Second; they returned to Berlin and set it down on tape. At the time, Abbado was still considered rather provisional as Karajan's successor, but he has always been a dedicated Brahmsian. It shows in the smooth, large-scaled, confident phrasing, and the plushness of the orchestra's sound in the latter days of Karajan's long reign remains.

25 years on from the release of Officium, the groundbreaking alliance of Jan Garbarek and The Hilliard Ensemble, comes Remember me, my dear, recorded during the final tour the group made in October 2014. The program is emblematic of the range of repertoire the Norwegian saxophonist and British vocal quartet explored together– from Pérotin, Hildegard von Bingen, Guillaume le Rouge, Antoine Brumel to Komitas , Arvo Pärt and more. It could be said that the Hilliard/Garbarek combination, in concert, transcended its source materials, with early music, contemporary composition and improvisation interfused in the responsive acoustics of sacred spaces. And this final album reminds us that the unique Garbarek/Hilliard combination, and its unprecedented exploration of sound, was consistently breathtaking.
