On Woven, the ensemble Wilde Roses twines together anonymous music from the British medieval and renaissance eras with early works pulled from the folk tradition. This music was the fabric of society, created from handed down music and woven into early counterpoint, like thread across the warp of a medieval weaver. Traveling from the 1100s to the end of the 1600s, and from the reign of King Henry I to Charles II, this program is a wonderful musical time machine.

There was a time in Norway when the position of organist was one of the most natural points of departure for a career as a professional musician. If one was interested in composing or writing texts about music, the post of church musician was a secure profession. Edvard Grieg had plans to become an organist while he was betrothed to his Nina in the 1860s. Church composers such as Knut Nystedt, Conrad Baden and Egil Hovland were organists, but also Klaus Egge and Edvard Fliflet Bræin received a comparable education. Arne Nordheim studied to be a church musician at the same time as Johan Kvandal, who graduated in 1951. Nordheim’s path led away from the organ gallery, but Kvandal found his place there, in Vålerengen Church in Oslo from 1959–1974. Although he was also a music critic, and a highly respected one for the newspapers Morgenposten and Aftenposten, he held on to his post as church musician.

"Nox", the Latin word for "night". In the world of art, the night of Schumann's Nachtstücke, Robert Zuidam's Nox and Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit creaks open its doors like a haunted castle for romantic poets and composers. Night-time visions became the foundations of a pre-Freudian subconscious in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Some of the great writers discovered their dreams and anxieties, seeing themselves and the magic of imagination in the mirror of fantasy.

Beethoven wrote sympathetically for the cello throughout his career, from the ardent, lyrical voice of the Op.1 piano trios onwards, and he rarely subjugated the instrument to its basso continuo role still prevalent in the works of Mozart and Haydn. He never contemplated a cello concerto, but his five sonatas, plus sets of crowd-pleasing variations on popular themes by Handel and Mozart, have attracted the great cellists of every era. However, the record catalogue boasts comparatively few period-instrument accounts, made according to the performing principles and bowing of Beethoven’s day, and so this new Brilliant Classics set promises a new and refreshing perspective on some perennially audacious masterpieces.

Beatles fans love to explain that the key to the successful partnership of John Lennon and Paul McCartney was their contrasting songwriting personalities – Lennon was the tongue in cheek sardonic wit, McCartney the earnest balladeer. On John Pizzarelli Meets the Beatles, a sharply conceived tribute which sets the duo's classics in a jazz trio with big-band arrangements, the singer/guitarist hits the mark more often when he's taking on the Lennon persona. He approaches "Cant' Buy Me Love," "When I'm 64," and "Get Back" with a playful wink, jumping off his speedy melody lines and the rising brass sections for extended improvisational tradeoffs with pianist Ray Kennedy, and adding colorful touches like scatting and even ad libbing his own lyrical verses based on the originals.

The present album—the first recording made on the historic organ Almeida e Silva of Diamantina (1787), state of Minas Gerais, Brazil—consists of the complete organ works published by Domenico Zipoli (Prato, Italy, 1688 – Córdoba, Argentina, 1726) in his Sonate d’Involatura per Organo e Cimbalo (Rome, 1716), besides some works attributed to the composer from the manuscript Sones mo organo (1746), a miscellany of keyboard works from the Jesuit mission of San Rafael de Velasco, Bolivia. The Chiquitos’ works selected for the present recording were very likely disseminated by priest Martin Schmid. Even if not effectively composed by Zipoli, they do reveal a clear stylistic influence of the composer who passed away in the Córdoba missions, where Schmid was in 1729 before leading to the Chiquitanía.

Hans Sommer was a respected composer in his day and achieved widespread popularity with his songs, especially the melodic and catchy pieces in Op. 4 and Op. 5. One biographer described him as ‘a direct predecessor of Hugo Wolf… the lines that start out with Schumann and Liszt meet in Sommer’, and his friend Richard Strauss considered him ‘an outstanding artist’. Quirks of publishing resulted in Sommer’s work being forgotten for a century, with the sensitive light and shade of his songs Op. 30 and Op. 40 remaining virtually unknown. As a result, this album includes mostly world premiere recordings.

Frederick II, King of Prussia, was a gifted musician who built up a court orchestra noted both for its quality and its size. Great musicians such as Graun, Quantz and C.P.E. Bach were members and contributed hugely to its standing. A patron of the fine arts, Frederick was a highly accomplished flautist whose works, performed in small private concerts, show a remarkable range of forms and expressive effects with slow movements offering long-breathed arcs of melody. The pieces by Alessandro De Marchi, conceived in the spirit of improvisation, provide a revealing impression of contemporary performance practice.
