Steyoyoke Black’s sound scientist, Nick Devon, presents his brand new experiment brought to light in the form of these four original tracks, the “Innerverse” EP. Once again his journey through the infinite universe of tech-made sonorities finds a shiny path.
The title track “Innerverse” couldn’t have been named better as it seems to be an incursion through Nick’s laboured sound identity. A bright, sophisticated affair where a waterfall of carefully chosen elements slowly pours upon us until the moment we are completely surrounded by a misty soundscape where tension and peace of mind harmonically coexist…

Gabriel Le Mar’s been on a roll. Not content to recast techno through his simmering dub vernacular to yield ever more bracing results, he manages to construct records of both gorgeous accessibility and wholly entrancing affect. Among Trees I Want To Live finds him returning to Carpe Sonum armed with his characteristic brimstone and brio. Back in the 90s, a track sporting the seductive pulsations of “Regenerative” would have been classified as armchair techno; genre tokenisms aside, it is instead a sterling five minutes of neon throb and quacking guitar process that easily casts a spell on the dancefloor and home listening space alike…

Label: Modern Obscure Music

Modern Obscure Music welcomes Sam Haar to the imprint for the first album released by an artist other than label founder Pedro Vian. The album is entitled Euso. Sam Haar is a New Jersey born producer and sound artist. Influenced by both experimentalism and traditional dance music, Haar’s music is something uniquely his own. He is best known as being one half of musical hardware loving duo Blondes with Zach Steinman (neither of them are actually blonde). They famously favour machines over computers and provide hypnotic live shows. Blondes have released the majority of their discography for Rvng Intl., before jumping to R&S in 2017 for the more danceable Warmth album.

Comprised of recordings made just after 1997's Orblivion (and subsequently trapped in major-label-restructuring limbo for nigh on three years), Cydonia is a hodgepodge of Orb styles and sounds, a quality production that nevertheless meanders too far and duplicates too many ideas first heard on Orb records ten years in the past. Much of Cydonia (the title is a reference to a region of Mars where astronauts reportedly found evidence of ancient civilization) aligns to the slightly spacey, slightly noisy dub heard on Orblivion and 1995's Orbus Terrarum. Thankfully, the album also has the exquisite pacing and smooth transitions of the classic Orblivion - a spritely Indian dub piece ("Promis") leads naturally into the lazy-day ambience of "Ghostdancing" and on into "Turn It Down," a paranoid production with the conspiracy-theory airs of earlier Orb work…

The perfect response to a music scene swamped by what Paterson himself called "lame ambient noodling for 70 minutes," Orbus Terrarum brings the mothership back to earth for a collision with some surprisingly harsh percussion and noisy synth. The melodies and dub lines of previous Orb recordings are still in the mix, and the esoteric bent of Pomme Fritz is muted somewhat. Orbus Terrarum is definitely not the place to start, but it's still a worthy successor to U.F.Orb. The final track, "Slug Dub," is an ambient epic with vocal samples taken from a children's story.

If the Orb's 1995 release Orbus Terrarum was an extended meditation on the earthbound, the band's follow-up in Orblivion rises from the muck of primordial ectoplasm for a guided tour of late 20th century Western culture's more paranoid face. From the Cold War (the album kicks off with Joseph McCarthy's intoning of the immortal invective "Are you now, or have you ever been…") to the pre-millennial ranting of David Thewlis' warped, apocalyptic monologue from Mike Leigh's Naked ("The bar code! The ubiquitous bar code!"), Orblivion does for post-industrial, turn of the century mania what earlier albums such as The Orb's Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld and U.F.Orb did for aliens and flying saucers…

A decade after they delivered Okie Dokie It's the Orb on Kompakt on…Kompakt, Alex Paterson and Thomas Fehlmann return to the stalwart Cologne label with an album bearing a less sportive title and it sounds like serious sci-fi business. The standard edition consists of four tracks, each one between nine and 15 minutes in length. Not one of them is humorously titled "Captain Korma" or "Komplikation," unless "God's Mirrorball" triggers a recollection of the first Tad album. Unlike Okie Dokie, this is all new, not an amalgamation of tweaked, previously released tracks and new material…

We did a rough GU survey of what DJs thought was going to be the sound of Ibiza this year and the thing that kept popping up is disco. Last year, we didn't hear much of that going on, tech-house was still the main event as far as wecould see. But maybe this year with Denis Sulta's new one going off in such a big way we'll see more glitterball grooves on the dancefloor. With that in mind, we've added some exclusive seventies flavours to this years Ibiza compilation.
