Rumbling, generic hard rock/metal, the record's primary distinction being that it was one of the first of its kind. Touches like the harpsichord on the ballad "Lake Isle of Innersfree" made it clear that the band was interesting in more than bombastic boogie…

Bert Sommer is often referred to as the lost star from Woodstock. Those who have only seen the documentary film, or heard the two sets released from the 1969 festival can be forgiven, however, if they are utterly unfamiliar with his name. Sommer was one of a tiny handful of performers who played the festival but never accrued career success, much less fame and fortune, coming out of it…

A band from Rome, founded at the end of the 60's with the name Il Laser by Elvezio Sbardella, who was in the early days their singer and later their lyricist and producer, they made their debut single single in 1972 for a small label from Emilia. The first line-up included a keyboardist named Gino. The album Vita sul pianeta, released by the Car Juke Box label with no promotion, is very short, with eight tracks in hard prog style, guitar and keyboards to the fore. A good album, though the production is not great, sought after by collectors for its rarity. The group didn't have a role singer, and the vocal parts are the weakest point of the album, the naive lyrics were about the evolution of mankind on earth. Laser broke up in 1973, right after the LP release, due to the fact that keyboardist D'Agostino had its military duties and the others had work commitments.

Despite the departure of organist Matthew Fisher, Procol Harum survived, and this album is ample proof. Fisher was one of the prime architects of the Harum sound, and his work on such classics as "Shine on Brightly" and, of course, "Whiter Shade of Pale" underline that. Procol continued as a four-piece, and it was indeed a good thing that they decided not to replace Fisher…

Esoteric Recordings are pleased to issue the first ever Official UK CD edition of the self titled album by Fields. When the first line-up of Rare Bird folded in early 1971, keyboard player Graham Field formed this outfit with bass player, vocalist and guitarist Alan Barry and King Crimson drummer Andy Mcculloch. Although the band failed to emulate the commercial success of Field’s previous group, the sole album they recorded was a magnificent example of British Progressive Rock. Much sought after for many years, this official Esoteric CD edition has been re-mastered from the original master tapes, features two bonus tracks and an essay by Sid Smith and interview with Graham Field.

Janis Joplin's second masterpiece (after Cheap Thrills), Pearl was designed as a showcase for her powerhouse vocals, stripping down the arrangements that had often previously cluttered her music or threatened to drown her out. Thanks also to a more consistent set of songs, the results are magnificent - given room to breathe, Joplin's trademark rasp conveys an aching, desperate passion on funked-up, bluesy rockers, ballads both dramatic and tender, and her signature song, the posthumous number one hit "Me and Bobby McGee." The unfinished "Buried Alive in the Blues" features no Joplin vocals - she was scheduled to record them on the day after she was found dead. Its incompleteness mirrors Joplin's career: Pearl's power leaves the listener to wonder what else Joplin could have accomplished, but few artists could ask for a better final statement.

Syrius was formed by Zsolt Baronits in 1962, Budapest, mainly to play beat music. The band profile changed in 1970 when they started playing progressive rock and jazz-rock fusion, when Jackie Orszaczky (bass, vocal), László Pataki (organ), Mihály Ráduly (saxophone, flute) and András Veszelinov (drums) joined the band. They got a contract in Australia where they recorded their most famous album called 'Devil's Masquerade'. There's that early 70s experimental feel to it as well - especially in some of the saxophone parts here, you get sudden bursts of unbridled free-jazz inching its way through the orchestrated wilderness. Still you never loose focus - you're still infatuated by warm and vibrant melody lines, that for some reason always seem a bit hidden beneath these mad interventions - either emanating from the aforementioned sax or an altogether preposterous sounding flute…
