Both underappreciated masters of jazz improvisation, Odean Pope and pianist Dave Burrell dish up some beautiful music throughout the nine original compositions found on this disk. This may seem like a somewhat subdued set for the label and these two giants, but anyone who has followed their careers knows that, although both musicians are identified as players pushing the edge, neither one of these fellows is a scorcher…

David Murray, doubling on tenor and bass clarinet, interacts with drummer Jack Dejohnette and (on two of the seven selections) bassist Fred Hopkins for a set of originals by Murray, DeJohnette and Butch Morris. The duo/trio explore a variety of moods with Murray's extroverted and advanced solos generally serving as the lead voice. Although an avant-garde set, this Japanese import has its mellow and melodic moments before the fire takes over again.

Creole, Murray's latest and his second for the Canadian Justin Time label, is a pure joy. It's a high mark in a career sparkling with exceptions and boundary pushing. Recorded in Guadeloupe in early 1998, Creole is a fiery, imaginative musical coalition of Murray's long-time American compatriots, James Newton (flute), D.D. Jackson (piano); Ray Drummond (bass) and Billy Hart (drums) and a group of Caribbean percussionists, vocalists and the outstanding guitar of Gérard Lockel. The near-perfect blend is accomplished with an emphasis on rhythm, something Murray has explored on a part-time basis since at least 1989's Golden Sea (Sound Aspects), with Kahil El'Zabar. Creole is full of surprises - and offers much that's inviting, exciting and worth hearing again… Creole is one of Murray's most accessible recordings to date, one of the easiest to find and one that is superlative among his many 1990s recordings.

Remarkable particularly for the performances of extraordinary pianist Danilo Rea and Italy's best kept secret, trumpeter Flavio Boltro, this recording of highly varied tunes by Italian bassist Giovanni Tommaso plays well in the company of an extraordinary quintet. The music is smack-dab in the middle of adventurous modern mainstream. In other words, it doesn't break any new ground but it pushes up against traditional boundaries. The solid front line of Boltro and saxophonist Pietro Tonolo wails over one of the world's great rhythm sections: drummer Roberto Gatto, Tommaso, and Rea. Rea does it all, with a superhuman two-handed approach. Boltro is one of the sharpest hard boppers around, able to play almost anything on his trumpet. The closer, a strange operatic tribute to Billie Holiday sung by Italian vocalist Carla Marcotulli, comes right out of left field. ~ AllMusic Review by Steve Loewy

The second, eponymous album from saxophonist-composer Tim Berne’s acoustic quartet Snakeoil. Over four years together, Berne and his band of New York standouts – pianist Matt Mitchell, clarinetist Oscar Noriega and drummer/percussionist Ches Smith – have developed a rapport that sounds like communal telepathy. The studio outcome is a marvel of kinetic action, the six pieces of Shadow Man making for music as visceral as it is cerebral; there is roller coaster dynamism and aching lyricism, roiling counterpoint and intriguing harmony, glinting detail and ensemble impact. The album is a dizzying experience for the senses, breathtaking in its sheer imaginative verve.

"Mermaid" is the second album of Aleksandra Kutrzepa Quartet. The music of the quartet combines elements of modern jazz with illustrative music. The synthesis of both these trends with elements of free jazz full of unlimited space will take listeners on a journey to the world of the authors' imagination. The album contains 7 compositions. As with the first album, each song is a separate musical image. The idea is to "paint the music" with sound and imagination. Instruments become a tool for obtaining colors illustrating onomatopoeic sounds. Space, infinity, non-obviousness and color impressions are the terms that best describe the album and its creators. As with the debut album, Anna Gadt took part in the recordings. In one of the songs we will also hear the pianist - Miłosz Bazarnik.

How much shit can one take? Well that depends. If it is being served by the quirky Polish trio 100nka—featuring guitarist Tomek Leś, bassist Adam Stodolski and percussionist Przemek Borowiecki—there may not be quite enough. Their music is rather undefinable, jumping and sneaking as it does into odd nooks and crannies…

Following up his 2007 effort Light On (HighNote), trumpeter Tom Harrell continues to document his original compositional voice and uncommonly tight working band with Prana Dance. Again there's the youthful, hungry lineup of tenor saxophonist Wayne Escoffery, pianist Danny Grissett and drummer Johnathan Blake, with long-serving Harrell stalwart Ugonna Okegwo digging in on bass. The material is all original, all new, teeming with harmonic secrets and an uncanny marriage of the simple and complex, not to mention ample possibilities for elaboration in the live setting—as the band proved during a galvanizing Thursday night set at New York's Village Vanguard in April, 2009.

This seemingly unbalanced band - two drummers, two bassists, three horns - founded by opera-writing polymath Lukas Kranzelbinder have forged a fierce reputation for sprawling sets that nod to the '60s spiritual Jazz of Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders undercut with Sons of Kemet's interlocking rhythm fluidity. If those parallels are apparent amid the full force of I Can Feel The Heat Closing In and slow-burning, spectral progressions of So He Spoke, the 19-minute Grilling Crickets in a Straw Hut is different level, as guesting guitarist Tobias Hoffmann and flute-wielding resident Johannes Schleiermacher soar above Kranzelbinder's boombastically grooving guembri.
Able to blind you into a trance and make you dance to your knees, Gris Gris twists, blisters and burns like a fevered dream.

Phalanx Ambassadors is the latest release from pianist/keyboardist/composer Matt Mitchell, whom Will Layman in PopMatters calls “the most complete and well-integrated improvising pianist of the last 15 years.” He also called his prior release, A Pouting Grimace (Pi 2017), “brilliant and varied… animated by breathtaking compositional imagination and startling arrangements.” Phalanx Ambassadors similarly features works that burst forth with intricate detail, featuring precise execution of multi-layered rhythmic material, adventurous harmonic exploration and otherworldly melodies. While rigorously structured, the music also leaves ample room for intertwining improvisation.

The CIMP label has documented trumpeter Paul Smoker well through the years. He appeared as either a sideman or leader on nine other recordings on the label before this one. Like his groundbreaking album Healing Song, the trumpeter focuses on deconstructing melodies, although this time they are mostly ones contributed by him or his colleagues, and insofar as they are unfamiliar, the results are somewhat less compelling…
