For his 3rd album "Closer", Gino Soccio hired Erma Shaw, a singer he’d met at Muscle Shoals. Shaw had been discovered as a teenager by Stax cofounder Estelle Axton and was a session vocalist at Willie Mitchell’s Royal Recording Studios in Memphis. For Soccio, she was the perfect voice to bring out his American influences: “I wanted to go ultra, ultra R&B, and she was Black as Black. She was Willie Mitchell’s girlfriend, she was from the South.” With Shaw on vocals, Soccio cut the LP Closer and the lead single “Try It Out,” which spent ten weeks at the top of the disco chart in 1981. It also crossed over to Black audiences, climbing as far as number twenty-two on the R&B chart - an achievement Soccio said is a crowning moment in his career. “I was proud of that,” he says. “I’d been criticized for being too Black: ‘It’s too Black, it’ll never work.’ Well, you can never be too Black.”

Bad Boys Blue is a multinational dance-pop group formed in Cologne, Germany, in 1984 and originally featuring British lead singer John McInerney, American Andrew Thomas, and Jamaican-born Trevor Taylor. After Taylor left the group in 1988, he was replaced by Trevor Travis; upon scoring a number 89 chart hit in 1993 with "Save Your Love," Travis exited as well, and Bad Boys Blue continued as a duo until adding Mo Russel in 1995. His 1999 departure made way for Jo Jo Max.

Buddha's Greatest Hits is the first definitive collection of the Austrian new wave dance-popster's hits, containing his two great singles – "Rock Me Amadeus" and "Der Kommissar" – plus such other hits as "Jeanny" and "Vienna Calling," album tracks, and Jason Nevins' bonus remix of "Der Kommissar." Of course, Falco's music hasn't dated particularly well and was always lightweight Euro-dance, but it can be a guilty pleasure, and this is the best place to find out why.

Emotional was released in the U.S. the same year as his breakthrough album, Falco 3, which included the hit "Rock Me Amadeus." It is hard not to consider that this album (on Sire, not A&M, the home of his hit record) was rushed to market to capitalize on his one-hit wonder status. Standout tracks include the title track, "Crime Time," "The Kiss of Kathleen Turner," and a follow-up to the banned song "Jeanny" called "Coming Home (Jeanny Part II, One Year Later." "Cowboyz and Indianz'" contains some interesting Star Wars allusions. Not essential by any means, even for somewhat serious fans. However, a surprisingly solid new wave album that is quirky and fun. A great used-record find.

Limited bookbound edition. 2016 release from the British singer/songwriter. Familia follows her #4 charting and silver certified album Wanderlust, which marked a critically acclaimed change in musical direction for Sophie. Released in January 2014, Wanderlust went on to spend six months in the UK chart and gave Sophie her first top 10 record since 2007's Trip The Light Fantastic. Wanderlust has gone on the sell in excess of 100,000 copies. Familia's lead track, 'Come With Us', brings with it a touch of Sophie's original disco sound. Upbeat from start to finish, it is an instant disco-pop track that is as modern as it is retro with a completely addictive chorus. Sophie says it is "what happens when Ed Harcourt and I write rour on the floor. It is a live disco song about the lure of a cult." Familia features 11-tracks, which continue to showcase Sophie's newfound lyrical and musical maturity, from the beautiful and emotive 'Unrequited' to the synth-laded ballad 'Death Of Love' and the alt-pop buoyant opener 'Wild Forever'.

"Whenever You Need Somebody" is the debut studio album by English singer Rick Astley. It was released on 16 November 1987 on RCA Records. It is his best-selling album and, according to his own official website, has sold 15.2 million copies worldwide. The album is listed as the 136th best-selling album in Spain, and was the seventh best-selling album of 1987 in the United Kingdom. A remastered version, containing remixes, was released in 2010. The writing credit of Dick Spatsley on "The Love Has Gone" was a reference to a running gag by Smash Hits magazine which deliberately misspelled his name.

Janice McClain is a native Philadelphian and from published articles it seems she was about 16 when she recorded “Smack Dab In The Middle”. Thanks to an artful remix by Larry Levan the RFC 12” single was one of the biggest club hits of 1979. Despite major club and radio exposure a follow-up single and album were not forthcoming. After a four year hiatus Janice popped up on the Mon-Tab 12” single “Burnin’ Up” in 1984, but without a major label backing it the single came and went with barely a whimper. The good that came out of that was that she met producer Nick Martinelli. He was able to get her an album deal with MCA Records and produced her self-titled 1986 album for the label. The album spawned two 12” singles: “Let’s Spend The Night Together” and “Passion And Pain”.

You think disco was nothing more than assembly line funk and freeze-dried beats? Then you need to step into the crisp grooves and walloping boogie found on this stunning collection of Chic's '70s recordings. Such hits as "Good Times," "Dance Dance Dance," and "Le Freak" used the stylistic innovations of James Brown and Sly Stone as a blueprint for a new era of funk. Bernard Edwards' basslines are so provocative they seem to talk, while Nile Rodgers' skeletal guitar runs hark back to Steve Cropper's slashing style. Sure, the songs don't say much. Sure, the dance mixes collected here ramble on after about six minutes. But once you step into these grooves - grooves that influenced an entire generation of artists from David Byrne to Prince - you will realize that these were indeed good times.

Kim Wilde's number one cover of the Supremes' "You Keep Me Hangin' On" gave her a number one hit back in 1987, but she gained chart life five years earlier with the glitzy bounce of "Kids in America," allied with the new decade's keyboard-laden pop sound and peaking at number 25 on Billboard's Top 40. The Singles Collection 1981-1993 is easily the most opportune avenue available to investigate the rest of Wilde's material. While video may have been her best friend throughout her career, sporting her attractive looks and modest Brit attitude, Wilde's music does contain some pleasing dance hooks and catchy melodies. "Another Step (Closer to You)" and "Love Is Holy" are bright and lively with typical yet congenial pop melodies, while "You Came" mixes a clean, keyboard-aided backdrop to Wilde's sheer vocal style. "Chequered Love" and "Water on Glass" aren't genius, but their arrant pop melodies and simplistic beats are anything but standstill.

The album features production by Sam Watters, Louis Biancaniello, Ric Wake, Evan Rogers, Carl Sturken, Rickey Minor, and The Shadowmen. Not That Kind failed to make an impact in the United States, where it peaked at number 168 on the Billboard 200. Nevertheless, it was commercially successful overseas, reaching the top 10 on the majority of the charts in Europe and Oceania. By May 2002, the album had sold over seven million copies worldwide.
