Originally titled Metrobolist, the album's name was changed at the last minute to The Man Who Sold The World – the original stereo master tapes were in fact labeled Metrobolist, with the title ultimately crossed out. The 2020 re-release of the album under its Metrobolist moniker has been remixed by original producer Tony Visconti, with the exception of the track ‘After All’ which Tony considered perfect as is, and is featured in its 2015 remaster incarnation.

The French label Barclay Records, with which singer/songwriter Jacques Brel was associated for most of the 1960s and '70s, released a compilation of recordings of his songs in March 2004 that differs significantly from this U.S. edition. The French version of Next Brel has 15 tracks to the American 12, but that doesn't mean simply that three tracks have been deleted. In fact, there are six tracks on the French album not found on the American one: "If We Only Have Love," by Dionne Warwick; "Amsterdam," by Anne Watts; "If You Go Away," by Emiliana Torrini; "Next," by Gavin Friday & the Man Seezer; "The Desperate Ones," by Nina Simone; and "Seasons in the Sun," by Terry Jacks (a number one hit in the U.S.). But there are also three tracks on the American album not contained on the French one: "Les Flamandes," by French chanteuse Barbara; "Ne Me Quitte Pas," by Nina Simone; and "My Death," by Scott Walker. The deletions and substitutions make for less repetition of songs on the American album.

David Bowie was not a" rock legend " like the others. Going through decades and fashions like this has always given Bowie the status of an innovator, a singular artist who manages to perpetually reinvent himself, to challenge himself as well… Whether glam, new wave, funk or soul, disco or electro, David Bowie has embraced all genres; sometimes even one step ahead. From Major Tom to Ziggy Stardust, from Aladdin Sane to Thin White Duke, he invented and reinvented himself, metamorphosed and showed off his body turned show. Body he made travel to the four corners of the world, from London to New York through Berlin. A geographical, physical, intellectual, dense and quite fascinating route that has made David Bowie an icon of the world of modern culture and a pioneer of pop. An icon playing on an assumed androgyny for, not to say claimed.

Taken from recently discovered sources in The David Bowie Archive®, I’M ONLY DANCING (THE SOUL TOUR 74) was recorded mostly during David’s performance at the Michigan Palace, Detroit on 20th October, 1974, with the encores taken from the Municipal Auditorium, Nashville on 30th November, 1974. The only song missing from the full set on the 20th October performance is ‘Diamond Dogs’ which was unfortunately only recorded in part. To make up for that it was decided to include the encores from the 30th November performance which featured ‘Diamond Dogs’ but also enables a fuller representation of the set from The Soul Tour including such numbers as ‘Knock On Wood’ and the ‘Foot Stomping / I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate’ medley.

The second (and essentially final) Tin Machine installment finds the group polishing up their sound significantly making a well-produced collection of songs. Many songs – notably "Amlapura" or "Goodbye Mr. Ed" – come as less than raucous rock songs (as heard on the previous record) but more as sonic works of art…
