The core, and only constant during the five year career of Sydney band The Numbers was the brother and sister team of Chris and Annalisse Morrow. In Chris, they had an excellent songwriter and inventive guitarist and, in Annalisse an equally accomplished musician and a striking focal point. Over the course of 3 years, they released one EP, six singles and two LP's. Many will remember them from their numerous Countdown appearances and their first two singles, "The Modern Song" and "Five Letter Word" and their self-titled debut LP. However, there's a whole lot more to their story. Although they reached their commercial peak early, they continued to release excellent material - four more singles and a neglected second album. Because of this, many did not get to hear some of their best material.

The extended version of the Cure's "In Between Days," the 12" mix of Blancmange's "Living on the Ceiling," one of François Kevorkian's many mixes of the Smiths' "This Charming Man," and the 12" mix of Underworld's "Underneath the Radar" highlight the fourth volume of Hi-Bias' Retro: Active series. Several tracks in the series have been either tough to find or impossible to obtain on CD, so the label is - in a sense - plugging a few gaps, rather than recycling the same versions of the same songs that you can find on dozens of thoughtless compilations. Ten of this volume's 12 tracks were previously unavailable on CD.

The third volume of Hi-Bias' Retro: Active series blows the dust off another batch of alternate mixes found on 12" singles released throughout the '80s, along with a couple later mixes that didn't necessarily make a big impact. Some of the noteworthy tracks include an extended mix of INXS' "The One Thing," the "Swing Beat Dub Mix" of Bananarama's "Cruel Summer," an extended mix of Simple Minds' "Someone, Somewhere (In Summertime)," and the "DMC Mix" of Duran Duran's "Save a Prayer," which must've been made long after the song's original issue. The wild card on this volume is Maurice & the Cliches' "Soft Core," a goofy rumble with a bleating synthesized-organ line.

If you're an '80s alt-pop junkie who scours the various-artist bins for new series that take surprising turns, Hi-Bias' Retro: Active series might fit the bill since it compiles alternate and extended mixes that tend to come from the original 12" releases. A lot of the tracks in the series have been out of circulation since they were first issued, so Hi-Bias should at least be credited for not recycling the same old batch of hits and semi-hits. Notables on this, the second volume, include the extended mix of the Human League's "Human," the dance remix of Blancmange's "Don't Tell Me," the Madhouse mix of Yaz's "State Farm," and the dub mix of Tears for Fears' "Shout."

The Pretenders' 1987 collection, The Singles, did a fine job of assembling most of the group's finest tracks up to that point in their career, so after another decade passed, their record company felt it was necessary to compile a more "updated" collection, 2000's Euro-only release Greatest Hits. Although it contains a total of 20 tracks, Greatest Hits ultimately fails to improve over its predecessor, for the simple fact that the early '80s was the Pretenders' artistic and commercial peak, and Greatest Hits contains too much latter-day material. Whereas it would have been a wise move to showcase such oft-overlooked classics as "Tattooed Love Boys," "Mystery Achievement," "Precious," "My City Was Gone," or "Birds of Paradise" (all of which weren't included on The Singles), Greatest Hits includes such not-as-strong selections as "Night in My Veins," "Breakfast in Bed," and "Human" instead. Although there are quite a few gems included ("Brass in Pocket," "Message of Love," "Talk of the Town," "Kid," "Back on the Chain Gang," etc.), Greatest Hits leaves out far too many prime selections to be considered truly definitive.

Buddha's Greatest Hits is the first definitive collection of the Austrian new wave dance-popster's hits, containing his two great singles – "Rock Me Amadeus" and "Der Kommissar" – plus such other hits as "Jeanny" and "Vienna Calling," album tracks, and Jason Nevins' bonus remix of "Der Kommissar." Of course, Falco's music hasn't dated particularly well and was always lightweight Euro-dance, but it can be a guilty pleasure, and this is the best place to find out why.

Going by the title, the Retro: Active series from Canada's Hi-Bias label sounds like it could be a nightmare of new wave and '80s-alternative singles remixed by modern producers to put a new spin on old favorites. Thankfully, the label has simply plucked extended versions and remixes from previously existing 12" singles - like the ones you might have sitting in your closet, or the ones you heard in clubs or even on the radio. The first volume is, surprisingly, one of the weakest in the series, with extended versions of Echo & the Bunnymen's "Bring on the Dancing Horses" and a-ha's "Take on Me" as a couple of the few highlights.

Songwriter and pianist Anne Clark has been a cult figure since the early '80s and has amassed a rather sizable catalog despite her small but rabid following. She writes nearly-Gothic love songs full of obsession and pathos, and pretty orchestral settings with clever instrumental figures and stinging piano runs and minor-key epiphanies. She's a consummate artist, playing to her strengths while trying to subtly, but surely, extend her reach, and always following her own muse, even when it takes her into dissonant territory. Most of her albums are out of print even on CD, and sell for collector's prices when they can be found. This is too bad, because Clark has assembled a solid, if quirky, and passionately honest body of work. This best-of issued by Beehive is truly that. It features 24 tracks and clocks in at over 75 minutes. Many of these are Clark's most lovely songs, such as "The Sitting Room," "All Night Party" (with Vini Reilly of Durutti Column), the "12" remix" of "Our Darkness," and "The Last Emotion," as well as instrumental themes such as "Swimming" and "An Ordinary Life".

MCA's 20th Century Masters – The Millennium Collection is a good, basic collection of Robert Palmer's biggest hits, including "Sneaking Sally (Through the Alley)," "Bad Case of Lovin' You," "Can We Still Be Friends," "Looking for Clues," "Some Guys Have All the Luck," "Addicted to Love," and "I Didn't Mean to Turn You On." Although there are a couple of hits and good album tracks missing, this has enough of the hits to make it worthwhile for casual listeners on a budget.
