While their subsequent chart-topping albums would contain far more ambitious songwriting and musicianship, the Police's 1978 debut, Outlandos d'Amour (translation: Outlaws of Love) is by far their most direct and straightforward release. Although Sting, Andy Summers, and Stewart Copeland were all superb instrumentalists with jazz backgrounds, it was much easier to get a record contract in late-'70s England if you were a punk/new wave artist, so the band decided to mask their instrumental prowess with a set of strong, adrenaline-charged rock, albeit with a reggae tinge. Some of it may have been simplistic ("Be My Girl-Sally," "Born in the '50s"), but Sting was already an ace songwriter, as evidenced by all-time classics like the good-girl-gone-bad tale of "Roxanne," and a pair of brokenhearted reggae-rock ditties, "Can't Stand Losing You" and "So Lonely."

In October 1973 Bob Marley and the Wailers gave an intimate performance at Capitol Studios in Hollywood. Whilst they performed and recorded twelve classic songs, from the sidelines producer Denny Cordell captured the event on camera. The footage lay unseen for decades and was long considered lost, until a freelance researcher, sent to archive all things Marley, found a few frames. Intrigued, for over 20 years the trail to track down more of the film led him through storage units and record company archives from New York and London to San Diego until, finally, enough of the precious fragments were assembled. Now, painstakingly restored and edited, the Capitol Session ’73 is ready for release and arguably the finest audio-visual recording of Bob Marley and the Wailers in existence.

The mid-70s were heady years for reggae. Chris Blackwell’s Island imprint had taken the music to the rock world, and Virgin boss Richard Branson wanted to follow suit. Aided by none other than John Lydon, the pair decamped to Kingston, JA, with a suitcase of money, and proceeded to sign some of the biggest acts of the decade. Initially the records were released on Virgin but, in March 1978, the Front Line imprint was launched to carry all the Jamaican product.

Roots Reggae, Reggae | Label: Greensleeves Records

Greensleeves' 2007 release Most Wanted: Classic Cuts 1978-1984 isn't the definitive Wailing Souls compilation, but with the band's discography sprawling across labels, decades, and many flavors of reggae, a one-disc wrap-up is a bit too much to ask. Most Wanted focuses on the transitional years of 1978-1984, just missing their seminal 1977 hit "Bredda Gravalicious," but displaying their evolution from rugged roots music to more mature roots and on to dancehall. "Bredda"'s successor, "War," is here, and like every other cut save "Fire House Rock," it's presented in its desirable 12" mix, which in this case stretches the infectious groove past the five-minute mark. Even better, "Kingdom Rise & Kingdom Fall" is rightfully epic at over ten minutes and "See Baba Joe" makes it to almost nine with its easy-strolling dub tacked on. Almost all of these extended mixes are previously unreleased on CD and extremely hard to find in any format, so it's a bit odd that Greensleeves doesn't crow about it on the cover, deciding instead to market this as a mere "best-of." For hardcore fans, this is the logical follow-up to Pressure Sounds' The Wailing Souls at Channel One, and it would be just as revelatory if didn't overlap that set by a couple tracks.
