After releasing Natty Dread, Charlie Hunter decided to form a new band, one without horns. The ensuing Pound For Pound features Hunter with a drummer, synthesizers, and vibraphonist Stefon Harris. Removing the horns puts Hunter's guitar in the spotlight, and he rises to the occasion, fulfilling the promise he's displayed on all of his previous releases. There's a stronger groove here than on any of Hunter's previous records, but what's remarkable about the album is the way he keeps the groove rolling while pushing the music into unpredictable, adventurous territory. That fusion of groove and challenging jazz makes Return of the Candyman a thoroughly rewarding listen.

Producer Chris Bangs cranks out ten jazzy dazzlers, contributing musically on bass and drums and co-writing eight of the ten songs, with many featuring the delightful vocals of Camelle Hinds, who is simply entrancing on "State of Mind" and "Always Be the One." The title track is a delicacy for the ears, an intricate movement arranged with diamond-cutter precision. Living up to his name, "Way Over There," "Watuzi Strut," and "Guiding Light" are bangers from a banging, slick, contemporary jazz CD.

Terence Blanchard's 2013 return to Blue Note, Magnetic, built upon his decades-long history of post-bop dynamism with a forward-thinking approach that blended edgy, modal improvisation with a sophisticated, genre-crossing compositional style. It was a concept he had been investigating on his previous efforts Bounce (2003), Flow (2005), and Choices (2009), and, though it had been years since Blanchard was considered a young lion, the eclecticism of the album matched the work of many of his younger contemporaries like trumpeter Christian Scott and pianist Robert Glasper, the latter of whom even played on Bounce.
