Strapping Young Lad's guitarist leader embarked on a solo career with the enigmatic "Ocean Machine", an album of encompassing, thrilling atmospheres in which pop, metal, progressive metal, trash and nuances of electronic blended together in a very balanced way. This atmosphere somewhat recreated the best from the 80's decade: from the mainstream heavy metal scene to the dark atmospheres of The Cure or the frantic energy of Queen. To his virtuous and somewhat prolific guitar work in the vein of Steve Vai or Joe Satriani, Devin Towsend added his inspired gift for creating remarkable melodies and outstanding choruses, while his dynamic voice and obtuse lyrics gave the album the necessary melodic profoundness…

Sabotage is the sixth studio album by English rock band Black Sabbath, released in July 1975. It was recorded in the midst of litigation with their former manager Patrick Meehan and the stress that resulted from the band's ongoing legal woes infiltrated the recording process, inspiring the album's title.

Positively intense and powerful music showing off Devin Townsend's aggressive guitar, skills at production and mixing, and perhaps his most up- front vocal performance ever. Despite the overall excellent sound of the album, it lacks the unpredictability in songwriting of Devin's most popular releases, which might make it come across as deceptively simple; after all, there are some big hooks and sing-along melodies throughout this album - which may actually make it the most accessible offering in DT's entire library. However, after a few careful listens it will be evident to fans that "Accelerated Evolution" has Townsend's mighty signature all over it, and there isn't anything simple going on here (scream along if you can!). Recommend to those interested in exploring Devin Townsend's music for the first time - it is easy to listen to and will more than likely hook you to this very talented musician's unique sound.

Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is the fifth studio album by English rock band Black Sabbath, released in December 1973. With 1973's Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, heavy metal godfathers Black Sabbath made a concerted effort to prove their remaining critics wrong by raising their creative stakes and dispensing unprecedented attention to the album's production standards, arrangements, and even the cover artwork. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath was arguably Black Sabbath's fifth masterpiece in four years, and remains an essential item in any heavy metal collection.

This album is part one of a two-part concept album about the deviation between the stories of the lives we live and the fictional stories we create such as movies and books, and how we use these made up fantasies to distract us from the lives that we lead.

With music, there’s typically three distinct methods or ideologies that come across during the creation process. First, and typically the most common one is playing it safe. What this means is that they create a sound that is tried and true, whether it’s a debut or deep into their own library, it’s something familiar and follows a safer structure. Secondly, you have the flip everything on its head end where artists scrap what potentially made them big in the first place for a sound wholly unexpected. This is a much riskier approach, especially for those who have established fanbases, but it’s definitely becoming a more common trend. Lastly though, you have the experimentation route. This route tries to take the best of everything, combining a swathe of ideas to create a sound that really can’t be pinpointed but creating something defining that eventually becomes more of safer route. Again, this is also becoming an increasing trend and one that German up-comers Time, The Valuator have taken to heart with their debut How Fleeting, How Fragile.

Based in Atlanta, Georgia (USA) and founded in 2001, Halcyon Way is the ultimate example of blue-collar work ethic, self-reliant bootstrapping, and hard work & perseverance in spite of nearly insurmountable odds. With a magnitude of catchy hooks, vocal harmonies a la King’s X or Stryper, and heavy, technical, yet ultimately accessible instrumentation, the band returns with a follow-up to to their Billboard-charting full-lnegth album "Conquer" from 2014.

The Canadian artist Devin Townsend keeps on surprising with his experimental and uncompromising music. His career started as a vocalist and guitarist on Steve Vai's "Sex & Religion" album. Devin's fourth solo album "Terria" is as diverse as his previous releases. The music varies between guitar pop, industrial-, progressive- and speed metal. It can change between quiet ballads to complex musical passages on to distorted guitar outbursts. Sometimes it can be described as total lunacy. Imagine a mix between Adrian Belew, Dream Theater, Frontline Assembly, King Crimson and Skinny Puppy.

Grin is the fifth studio album by the Swiss thrash metal band Coroner, released in 1993. It was the band's final album before their fourteen-year break up from 1996 to 2010 (although their compilation album, 1995's Coroner featured several new tracks). The album is considered a major departure from Coroner's early work, consisting of elements of groove metal and industrial metal, with much less emphasis on speed and technicality. Grin is the last Coroner album to feature drummer Marky Edelmann, who left the band in 2014. After being out of print for many years, Noise/BMG reissued the album in 2018, remastered with the same track list in a digipack cd case, with additional photographs of the band and memorabilia.

Mental Vortex is the fourth album by the Swiss thrash metal band Coroner, released on August 12, 1991. After being out of print for many years, Noise/BMG reissued the album in 2018, remastered with the same track list in a digipack cd case, with additional photographs of the band and memorabilia. This is not as great as No More Color, but the quality isn't drastically lower. Mental Vortex is the musical analogue to the immaculate machines which the Swiss watches have had the reputation to be all these years.

No More Color is Coroner's third album. It is the release where they started to truly 'progress', as the songs are still similar to their older, speedy, European thrash metal but start to feature elements of the avant-garde progressive thrash of their later albums. This album features very proficient instrumentation and incorporation of elements from genres such as jazz fusion, progressive rock and classical music, which would later be an influence on the evolution and maturity of the experimental side of heavy metal, including acts such as Death.

Although the two aren't musically alike, Neil Young and Devin Townsend follow a similar approach to making music. Young uses his hard-rocking band Crazy Horse to recharge his batteries, so that he can go off and pursue other musical areas of interest as a solo artist. And Townsend has the same setup - returning time and time again back to "the band thing" (heavy metallists Strapping Young Lad) before tackling other styles as a solo artist. While Townsend's 2006 solo outing Synchestra does let quite a few headbanging elements slip through the metal detectors, Townsend's quirkiness continues to bubble to the surface throughout…
