After CYNTHESIS and its amazing second recording, the pertinently titled album, “ReEvolution”, the ultra talented Californian geminis Brothers, Troy & Jasun Tipton (ex ZERO HOUR), are back with another chapter in their instrumental project discography…ABNORMAL THOUGHT PATTERNS and once again the expansion of their genuine style and the maturated development is terrific, the release date is set for late June…The band broad universe is so extended that the term "limitless" seems underrated and non-representative of their extraordinary and unstoppable musical dominion!…

It’s very easy to come away from listening to a lot of technical metal feeling a little empty. Beneath the showmanship and undeniable talent, the genre is often guilty of failing to invoke any real feeling: when surgical precision takes centre stage a certain energy almost invariably paves the way. Animals as Leaders are no exceptions to this – where their 3 previous full-lengths have all in their own right been extremely impressive, stellar pieces of work, they are not without their shortcomings: a truly inventive and well-realised debut was somewhat clouded by muddy production and slightly blunted guitar tones, Weightless was at times cold, and is massively top-heavy in this reviewer’s opinion, and The Joy of Motion percussion was a little overpowered and detracted from a lot of the new-found warmth the tracks brought…

We’ve been waiting all year for a great post-rock album, and as summer approaches, we’ve finally gotten one. Norwegian sextet Spurv has made major strides since 2015’s Skarntyde, which demonstrated substantial progress from 2012’s debut. On Myra, the tracks are shorter, the riffs more diverse, the power through the roof. This is not a headphone album, or even a car album; it deserves the full speaker treatment. Even a house is hardly enough to contain its energy; an outdoor stadium would be perfect. Spurv means sparrow, but here it sounds like a pterodactyl. As soon as those monster riffs drop in “et løfte i fall,” we’re sold.

Popular London-based prog-metal/rock act Haken return quite quickly after their stop-gap live disc "L-1VE" a few months back with 2018's `Vector', a work that's likely going to be well-received by their existing fanbase as well as being able to be approached easily by newcomers who don't mind their prog rock on the louder side! A concept album telling the tale of a patient in an asylum being subjected to all kinds of psychological and physical experiments, `Vector' mixes the heavy instrumental show-boating runs with frantic rock and thoughtful ballad passages that the band always deliver, even if they strip back virtually all of the Seventies/Eighties influences from their past few discs this time around, and they throw in a touch of jazz and electronica along with a big variety of rich vocal arrangements.

Hot off the heels of their mind blowing 2016 opus “Pure”, Norway’s IN THE WOODS… return with their latest genre-destroying masterpiece, “Cease the Day”. Continuing to refine and perfect their sound while ever expanding it in new directions, “Cease the Day” is a powerful and kaleidoscopic effort. A thunderous undercurrent of melodic riffing drives these songs forward, elements of doom, death, and progressive metal all coming together to form a cohesive whole. Chilling ambience, psychedelia, avant-garde, and deep soaring vocals ebb and flow to craft a unique sound that truly must be heard to be believed, all before crushing the listener with the band’s most extreme moments since their debut “Heart of the Ages”. With “Cease the Day”, IN THE WOODS… continue to prove themselves as masters of whatever craft they choose to pursue. New ventures await…

Heir to Despair is one of their more expressive and progressive releases, which is saying something given the band’s history.

2018 has been a busy year for Saber Tiger. After the band and the global metal market got to know each other through the international release of Bystander Effect in early 2018 and the following Eastern Europe Devastation Tour through Ukraine, Russia, Latvia and Lithuania, the time has come for the second international release of the Japanese heavy metal giants. Obscure Diversity shows a band that has no intention of slowing down more than three and a half decades after their genesis. If anything, their trademark blend of classy melodicism and fierce intensity is in better balance than ever.

“Spellbound” is the new album of Progressive Death Metal veterans SADIST. Produced and mixed by Tommy Talamanca at Nadir Music Studios in Genova, Italy, “Spellbound” is centered around the life and work of influential filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock. Each of the 11 songs included in the album traces the plot of a Hitchcock movie, including masterpieces such as “Frenzy”, “Notorius”, “The Birds” and of course “Psycho”, all with a very distinctive Sadist twist that make them stand out. Musically, “Spellbound” is one the band’s heaviest and darkest albums to date, but the Progressive and Death Metal influences that fans of the band have learned to love are still intact.

Rising from the ashes of Agalloch and Giant Squid, a new group is born: Khôrada. Featuring former Agalloch members Don Anderson (guitar), Jason Walton (bass) and Aesop Dekker (drums) alongside ex-Giant Squid guitarist / vocalist Aaron John Gregory, Khôrada creates colossal, textured, and emotionally powerful music. As a completely fresh concept, Khôrada is an opportunity for the musicians to explore new soundscapes while challenging themselves creatively. With their debut album Salt, Khôrada forges breathtaking swathes of sound that swell, stretch, submerge and recede with panoramic power. At once atmospheric, aggressive and apocalyptic, the album's emotion is driven by the band members' view of today's world; these are precarious times.

It's difficult to believe that it's been five long years since Voivod released their last studio album, 2013's solid Target Earth. That record put to rest rumours that the Montreal outfit was about to give up the ghost after three decades and some startling losses: Fomr the death of founding guitarist Denis "Piggy" D'Amour in 2005 to the departure of original bassist Jean-Yves Theriault in 2014 to pursue his own project, Coeur Atomique. The quality taste the band gave us on the five track Post Society EP of 2016 whet the appetite for this date. (It and a handful of live cuts are included on a bonus disk.)
