The Definitive Collection does an effective job of chronicling the majority of Martha & the Vandellas biggest hits from their first chart entry "Come and Get These Memories" in 1963 to their final one, "Honey Chile," in 1967. All of the familiar radio tracks such as "Heatwave," "Dancing in the Street," "Nowhere to Run," and "Jimmy Mack" are featured alongside several singles of equal quality that didn't get as much radio play upon initial release. While there are other, more exhaustive compilations, such as the double-disc set Live Wire! The Singles 1962-1972, this is the best concise overview of Martha & the Vandellas' career, containing the most hits on a single disc.

One of the classic groups of the late 1940's/early 1950's, the Dominoes were led by Juillard-trained vocal coach Billy Ward, and are the bridge between the earlier Gospel and Ink Spots type of group and the coming world of Doo-Wop, R&B, and Rock'n'Roll. Their original lead singer Clyde McPhatter was coached by Ward to let his Gospel experience explode in a pop context, producing a fresh and startling sound which not only topped the R&B charts, but made them among the first black groups to gain a substantial following among young white kids, laying the ground for Alan Freed's promotion of black music as Rock'n'Roll Financial disagreements broke up the original group at the beginning of 1953…

This is a great compilation of group harmony (a.k.a. doo wop) vocal performances, mostly from the 1950s. Some of these tracks circulate widely on holiday compilations, but others are very rare. In my collection, for example, this release is my only source for the tracks by the Shantons, the Golden Gate Quartet, the Larks, and Sir Jablonski.

This collection of rarities from the Sceptor vaults strengthens the case for the Shirelles to be considered the finest of the girl groups of the 60s. Lost & Found succinctly describes this rare collection of Shirelles material. The remastering job is excellent here and equally fine on all other Shirelles collections re-issued on the Ace label. Hooray!!!!

Vintage Music is a compilation series released by MCA Records in 1986. There were 10 volumes when released on vinyl and cassette but the compact disc versions put together two at a time, so there was a total of five CD's in the series: 1 & 2, 3 & 4, and so on. This series was remastered by Steve Hoffman from the best available master recordings, with a few songs taken from versions that had not been heard before. Notable is the version of Steppenwolf's "Born To Be Wild" used here.

Following the critical acclaim and enthusiastic response to Heavy Sugar: The Pure Essence of New Orleans R&B, compiler Stuart Colman has dug deep into the city’s unique recording legacy to bring about a sumptuous second helping. In addition to the requisite sourcings, the net has been cast wider still in order to focus on material gleaned from such picayune outlets as Rustone, Pontchartrain, Athens, Winner and Spinett. There is a very good reason for this.
