This whopping 30-CD box set gathers together the best of Trojan's three-disc box set series. Included are the Ska, DJ, Dub, Instrumentals, Jamaican Superstars, Lovers, Producer Series, Rocksteady, Roots, and Tribute to Bob Marley volumes, each of which can be found under Trojan Box Set for their individual reviews. What's lacking here is a booklet with additional notes and information; the bulk seems to demand some extra coverage and care, yet all that's here are the original notes of each volume – only as much text as can fit on the back of the CD sleeves. From a music standpoint, however, this box is excellent; a truly diverse and comprehensive collection. Of the 500 songs, less than ten reappear on another volume, so you get a more-than-satisfying amount of music spanning the history of the Trojan label.

For anyone in their mid-teens in the mid-5Os, and into music, it had to be rock'n'roll - American rock'n roll. There was no British equivalent to the sound. In the UK, it was Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, The Platters, Alan Freed, Radio Luxembourg, Voice Of America. If the right people get to know about this and hear the quality, this will sell and sell.

Quirky in the extreme, 'Make Mine Mondo!' does what it says on the tin and then some. Culled from the vaults of the eccentric Dor label, fuzzed-out garage bands, wayward rockabillies and mental instrumentalists cook up a mele of mondo mayhem in long-ago Los Angeles. Comprising 11 extremely rare and sought after garage band singles (nine previously uncompiled and new to CD); eight previously uncompiled instrumentals (also new to CD) and several unreleased rock'n'roll/R&B numbers, all remastered for legitimate first-time release, 'Make Mine Mondo!' screams for attention in the busy collectors' market.

This 32 track CD album explores the more up-tempo recordings of Hollywood based label Crest Records, which was owned by Sylvester Cross. The label issued an incredible array of music from an equally amazing variety of artists, and this CD focuses mainly on the white artists which left their musical legacy on the Crest label. As was often the case of small independent labels very few national hits emerged, however some artists became famous worldwide; Glen Campbell, and Eddie Cochran, instantly come to mind, and we include Eddies first solo release Skinny Jim. Premature mortality was high among the early rockers and Tommy Dee gained recognition through his tribute recording of Three Stars (not included).

Bill Haley was the first boss of Rock'n' Roll. Bear Family presents with this compilation the music that has influenced Haley and - in addition - a cross-genre collection of the best cover versions of his classic songs. The CD album covers two decades with recordings from 1938 - 1959! Sound influences of the early years. When Haley along with his Saddlemen turned to Boogie themes and R&B tracks during the late 1940s, Bill - coming from Western Swing - mixed the styles almost automatically and developed an early form of Rock 'n' Roll music.

James Brown's two-CD 40th Anniversary Collection gathered 40 of the soul-funk giant's biggest hits, and in keeping with its title, The 50th Anniversary Collection is just that little bit bigger and better, with (could you guess?) 50 of his most famous tracks. From 1956's "Please, Please, Please" to 1988's "Static, Pts. 1 & 2," it has almost all of his biggies, though the absence of the 1986 Top Five hit "Living in America" is puzzling indeed. But that's a minor quibble given the dozens of classics onboard, which taken as a whole not only represent the best Brown compilation on the market, but also make a plain case for the singer as one of the major talents of 20th century American music. It's not wholly redundant on the off-chance that you're willing to replace 40th Anniversary Collection, mopping up a few hits of note ("Bewildered," "Bring It Up," "Let Yourself Go," "I Can't Stand Myself [When You Touch Me], Pt. 1," "It's a New Day, Pt. 1," "The Popcorn") that didn't make the cut the previous time around. If you're keeping score, it does lose a couple minor goodies from 40th Anniversary Collection ("Money Won't Change You," "King Heroin"). Also, the '70s funk years might be given too much emphasis and his R&B-soul beginnings shortchanged, though there are plenty of other reissues of his '50s/'60s material out there if you want to investigate further.
