DreamWeaver marks George Duke's return to recording after a three-year silence, and his first since the death of his wife Corine in 2012. While he is always diverse, this set is uncommonly so. The opener, a slippery, atmospheric title intro, flows directly into the Latin-tinged "Stones of Orion," a jazz tune with Duke on piano, Rhodes, and synths, Stanley Clarke on upright bass, and a four-piece horn section. It's shimmering groove-oriented jazz that reflects the time that Duke spent with Cannonball Adderley. "Trippin'" is a funky, jazzed-up R&B tune where he offers his autobiography; it features some fine muted trumpet work by Michael Patches Stewart. "Missing You" is a jazz ballad tribute to Corine, with the finest vocal Duke has laid down in a decade. But there's funk here, too, in the fat stomper "Ashtray."

Kid Creole & The Coconuts is one of the hardest working American live touring bands ever, led by the indomitable and never duplicated showman and vocalist extraordinaire, August Darnell. His music has many energetic styles melded together, mainly a mix of Latin American, South American, Caribbean, Trinidadian, Calloway styles and disco/dance music. There are many jazz, big band, and swing era influences as well. 'The Coconuts' are a group of usually 3 female backing vocalists and dancers who complement the live show. This is a great melodic and musical release, full of intense energy and swing.

Jamaaladeen Tacuma's second free funk effort for Gramavision is almost the equal of his first (Show Stopper). Once again the first four songs feature his regular band (a quintet with guitarist Rick Iannacone and altoist James Watkins) while the second half of the program showcases his electric bass in diverse groups. "Dancing in Your Head" has some of the members of Ornette Coleman's Prime Time (including the innovative altoist); Tacuma often played with Ornette during this period. The lengthy "The Battle of Images" features Tacuma with the Ebony String Quartet and a percussionist, "There He Stood" has the leader joined by percussionists and a poet.

For the most part, Jackson's '80s albums for Columbia each boasted a few strong tracks surrounded by a surplus of filler. Though her "quivering" vocal stylings are effective at times, she has a rather plain voice without much range, making vibrant songs and producers who can pull out a lot of her the most ideal recording situation. The absence of these two ingredients makes R U Tuff Enuff the weakest album in her catalog. The opening "Perfect Combination" has a bland melody and is an obvious knock-off of L.A. Reid and Babyface's production sound, particularly their work on the Whispers' "Rock Steady"; the similar-sounding "Read Between the Lines" and sterile title track are just as lackluster. More impressive are the pleasant ballad "This Love Is Forever" and the lightly jazzy swayer "Sweetest Dreams" but those two tracks alone aren't worth the monotony of the other six cuts.

Terrapin Station is the ninth studio album by the Grateful Dead, and was originally released on July 27, 1977. This is the first Grateful Dead album on Arista Records after releasing other albums on its own Grateful Dead Records and their previous label, Warner Bros. According to Dennis McNally, Jerry Garcia conceived the idea for the song "Terrapin Station Part One" while driving across the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. The album was released for the first time on CD in 1987 by Arista Records before being re-released in 2000 by BMG International. It was then remastered, expanded, and released as part of the Beyond Description (1973-1989) box set in October 2004 with studio outtakes and live songs.

Marcos Valle was the Renaissance man of Brazilian pop, a singer/songwriter/producer who straddled the country's music world from the early days of the bossa nova craze well into the fusion-soaked sound of '80s MPB. Though his reputation in America never quite compared to contemporaries like Caetano Veloso, Milton Nascimento, Gilberto Gil, or even Tom Ze, Valle is one of the most important and popular performers in the history of Brazilian pop.

Exodus is a 1995 album by The New Power Generation. Although the track listing boasts 21 tracks, many of them are narrative segues, leaving only nine actual songs. Of those, one is an instrumental. The album spawned three singles, however only one was released in the United States. The New Power Generation, also known as The NPG, was the backing band of musician Prince.

On this 1980 album, Osibisa drifted yet further toward an R&B dance-pop direction than they had on their previous studio record, Ojah Awake. Of course they weren't alone among popular recording artists in making concessions to disco during this era, and they didn't bury their African roots. It was still a somewhat dispiriting trend, and while much of the band's characteristic blend of African and Western influences remained intact, the songs – all of them around five minutes long, and relying on grooves more than content – were kind of blah. "Celebration" is about as close to a conventional soul-funk-disco track as the band got, and seems more like an Earth, Wind & Fire outing than an Osibisa one. At other points, the elements get more eclectic, creative, and (by Western pop standards) exotic; "Africa We GoGo" is reasonably convincing Africanized funk.

After several conversations with reggae producer Brian Dixon, they both realized they were on the same page.
