Margino (real name Kim Kallie) is a South African artist. She recorded her first song at the age of eight, when she performed ''Montreal'' with her mother Judy Page. She sang with the reggae group Kariba and jazz rock outfit Turbo in the early 80's, and later did backing vocals for Future and others. She first shot to fame as a solo star with a version of ''Holiday'' (written by Lisa Stevens and Curtis Hudson, credited as Cathy Hudson), which was released at the same time as Madonna's version. Margino also had a hit in 1983 with a cover of In-Deep's ''Last Night a DJ Saved My Life'', that went to #16 on the South African Top 30 and charted for 10 weeks. She now runs a Performance Academy from her studio, and continues to perform on stage at events around Cape Town.

Kiki Dee looks young and innocent on this Tamla recording, and her voice is beautiful as she covers some classic Motown here an up-tempo "I Second That Emotion," a unique "For Once in My Life." The late Jimmy Miller said that Dee and Dusty Springfield were good friends. Dee covers Springfield's "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me," and it is excellent, but what is more intriguing is how much she sounds like Dusty Springfield on the lesser-known "Johnny Raven." Tackling "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing" without the duet that Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's version enjoyed is commendable the Motown sound making a transition to showcase a white soul singer works. "Jimmy" is haunting, and displays the power and subtlety absent in her two big hit recordings for and with Elton John a few years later.

The album shows how the ideals of the civil rights movement, black power and black nationalism influenced the evolvement of radical African-American music in the United States of America in the intensely political and revolutionary period at the end of the 1960s following the assassinations of Malcolm X, Martin Luther King and the rise of the Black Panther party.

A continuation of the sound established on his Alligator debut, I Smell Smoke is even more impressive than its much-heralded predecessor. While vocally Michael Burks still invites comparison to Albert King, especially on gospel-fried ballads like "Lie to Me" (the Flying V guitar he sports on this album's cover shot further reinforces the similarities between the two artists), his guitar work has become more electrified and confident. With a tone sounding at times like Eric Clapton's psychedelic work in Cream and a rugged four-piece band supporting him, this is a tough, uncompromising contemporary blues/blues-rock/R&B album that doesn't pull punches.
