He Got Out His Big Ten Inch: A Cornucopia of Risque R&B, Rude Blues and Double-Entendre Doo-Wop is a 3CD box set released by Indigo/Sanctuary in 2004. These songs were dirty long before the term rock'n'roll was originated for a music genre, with various songs about rock hard penises and moist vaginas, all spoken in metaphor. Some of these songs were made famous through other means, used in motion pictures or including Aerosmith's 1975 cover of "Big Ten Inch Record".

With Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent and even some R&B acts like Little Richard and Fats Domino gaining popularity it was obvious that Britain could no longer rely on ageing pop singers to service the rock and roll audience and the search for home grown talent began. This excellent 2CD set from Jasmine turns the spotlight onto some of the lesser known rock and roll acts that surfaced on our shores. Although Tommy Steele can't quite be labelled as unsung, he was the first teenage star to perform rock and roll and scored the first home grown hit with the original song 'Rock With The Caveman'.

Hallyday has completed 181 tours, had 18 platinum albums, and has sold more than 80 million records worldwide, making him one of the world's best-selling artists of all time. Hallyday remains largely unknown outside of the Francophone world, thus earning the nickname "the biggest rock star you've never heard of" in English-speaking countries.

Of all the early rock & rollers, Fats Domino was the easiest to take for granted, since he made it all seem so easy. Even when it rocked hard, his music was so relaxed, so friendly that it sounded effortless and natural, which was part of the reason that his classic recordings for Imperial in the '50s were so consistently enjoyable. All the hits, many of their flips sides, and most of his album cuts were flat-out fun – maybe not as revolutionary as work by Little Richard, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, and the Everly Brothers, but his body of work for Imperial not only stands proudly next to theirs, but is just as influential. This much is clear after years of hindsight, but in the late '60s he was as passé as any of his peers, even if there were legions of new rockers, from the Beatles to Randy Newman, who were raised on his music.

Rock & Roll / Rhythm & Blues / Blues / South Louisiana

Letting the good times roll again, with this second visit to the dynamic South Louisiana R&B scene there is no waver in the quality of music. We’ve added the work of another Louisiana record man, Sam Montel from Baton Rouge, to the vast stockpile of material in the vaults of J.D. Miller, Eddie Shuler, Floyd Soileau and Jake Graffagnino. Sam (originally Montalbano) got into the music business when his childhood friend Jimmy Clanton hit the charts. Sam became his road manager and the whole scene got into his blood. He decided to start his own record label when only 18 years old. His first release, Lester Robertson’s ‘My Girl Across Town’, is included here, as is a previously unissued outing from Robertson.

This five-disc set was the first release in BMG's effort to present Elvis's recorded legacy in a manner befitting the most important musical artist of his time. The strategy was simple–showcase, in chronological order, remastered versions of the King's 1950s output, from his sessions with Sam Phillips at Sun Studios (where they arguably invented the very notion of rock & roll) through his 1958 Army induction. Not everything Elvis recorded in the '50s was great (just as not everything he recorded in Hollywood was rotten), but there are dozens of tracks here that, quite simply, can make a bad day seem all that much better. Which surely still makes him the king of something. Suffice it to say this is one box set that lives up to its title.

Digitally remastered and expanded two CD Legacy edition of this 1975 album. In the lead up to the Today sessions, Elvis won a Grammy for 'Best Inspirational Performance' of 1975. The award was for an in-concert version of "How Great Thou Art," and it couldn't have come at a better time. The chance to take possession of the treasured trophy came when Elvis flew out to the coast in readiness to rehearse and record at RCA's studio in Hollywood. Elvis' last studio album, like his first, was made up of songs he chose and loved.

In those days there was a "tone" knob that varied the sound between muffled through tinny. It's still mono, but the quality is so good you can actually understand what Elvis is saying. The disk is a replica of the vinyl album blue with white lettering. Those born in the fifties or earlier have their own memories of what happened to it. I recall a jealous neighbor who put a fist right on Elvis's jaw.

Released in 1970, this was one of the first of what would become several live performance albums. It was a hit, which considering how Elvis' management operated would ensure more such releases in the future. The album peaked at 13 on the US Billboard album chart and would eventually be certified PLATINUM by the RIAA. It was an even bigger hit in the UK reaching number 2 on the album chart there. This is a solid performance and includes a few songs that he rarely performed such as Sweet Caroline, Runaway, and Yesterday. It also includes the hit song The Wonder Of You, which was a top ten hit in the US and went all the way to number 1 on the US Adult Contemporary chart and in the UK.

2006 issued digitally remastered edition of legendary R&B singer's monumental debut album. Originally released in 1958, this is the first CD to keep the original tracklist intact. The best known track from this set is "I Put A Spell On You", a hit for Hawkins as well as many others down the line like Creedence Clearwater Revival, Them (featuring Van Morrison), Arthur Brown and Bryan Ferry. The album's original 12 tracks are augmented here with 13 bonus recordings, including recordings he made in 1974 for the RCA label.

Rock'n'roll was born in the United States - and 1958 was the year it was exported to the rest of the world. Buddy Holly, who kicks off our first disc with 'Rave On', hit British shores in March with the force of a musical hurricane. Following closely behind him were the like of The Chordettes, Bobby Day, The Everly Brothers and Connie Francis, all included here on this 2 disc compilation.
