Hackensack - Up the Hardway, title track from their debut (and only official album for Polydor) album, released in 1974. Hackensack existed between 1968 and 1974 and released the abovementioned album and one single. They were formed by vocalist Nicky Moore, one of England's best frontmen. Their stage act was reminiscent of The Who and they built up a good reputation as a hard working and hard rocking blues/rock quartet. Their only album release is quite collectible today, and had a good mix of solid rockers as well as the odd tasteful blues track. Unfortunately its failure to do much led to the demise of the band in 1974. Moore subsequently joined Tiger, Samson and Mammoth, with drummer Simon Fox moving on to Be Bop Deluxe and guitarist Ray Smith (a.k.a. Ray Major ) moving on to The British Lions, an offshoot of Mott the Hoople.

Spiritchaser is the seventh studio album by Dead Can Dance, and the last before Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard went their separate ways. It expands on its exploration of world music, and like Into the Labyrinth, was recorded at Quivvy Church, Perry's personal studio in Ireland. The album was dedicated to Lisa Gerrard's deceased brother, Mark Gerrard. The track "Indus" contains a melody that is very similar to that of "Within You Without You", a Beatles song that George Harrison wrote and recorded with Indian musicians in 1967. Although not deliberate, Perry and Gerrard were asked to contact Harrison for his permission to use it; he granted it, but the record company insisted that they give him partial songwriting credit on "Indus".

Helter Skelter was glam rock band with melodic-rock kooky originally from Germany. Born on the ruins of Vamp, Helter Skelter released in 1988 his only drive «Welcome To The World Of Helter Skelter», the output of which was reinforced by the success of hit singles «Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde », eventually became their most famous song. Even in the best of times to Helter Skelter no one took seriously, at best, considering them clowns with huge bouffant, Maiko centimeters and bright clothes. With all this, their music was even a sense of the original - it was a real party glam with lyrics about a night of fun, circuses, endless party with beautiful girls, drinking and teenage adventures. And were not understood even by fans of style - and their music really sounds at times like the soundtrack to some street fair, - Helter Skelter safely disintegrated, leaving a single CD, reissued 20 years later, with a few bonuses.

Just as they did with their unexcitingly named 2010 debut, Vol. 1, Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats dedicate their sophomore album, the following year's tellingly named Blood Lust, to celebrating the Summer of Love's soul-chilling autumn: a blasted landscape, post-flower power, resembling Altamont's killing fields, reeking of the Manson Family murders, and, naturally, sounding like a mish-mash of all of the apocalyptic musical forces that converged upon that era. We're talking a mixture of psychedelic rock's harrowing comedown, garage and punk rock's nihilistic ascent, and the earliest manifestations of heavy metal's occult-laced, nerve-damaging bludgeon (later reclassified as doom) - all poured into a deadly cocktail…

This stunning 2 CD set features the 1975 Nucleus album Alleycat and the 1976 compilation Direct Hits. Alleycat sees the British fusion ensemble getting downright funky and rocking, keeping pace quite well with other popular groups of the time such as Miles Davis, Return to Forever, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report, and the Tony Williams Lifetime. Ian Carr (trumpet/flugelhorn/synthesizer) and his band included on this album Bob Bertles on sax & flute, Ken Shaw on guitar, Geoff Castle on keyboards & Moog, Roger Sutton on bass, and Roger Sellers on drums-together they make a formidable line-up that delivers on all levels…

Rock / Power Pop

The third album on Elektra by the Shoes was an effort at self production, and sounds as good as any of their previous efforts. Seems "Boomerang" was Shoes as the Shoes understood themselves; melodic power-pop with buzzing guitars and rich harmonies. It's not the flawless masterstroke "Present Tense" or the fuzzed out speed ball of "Tongue Twister," it's still a darn good album. In fact, with the exception of "The Tube" and "Shake It Away," all the songs here are mini-masterpieces. "Summer Rain" rates as one of my fave Shoes songs, and "Mayday" and "What Love Means" are among the Shoes tunes that make me wonder why these guys never brokered a hit single. I'm also partial to the brooding "Tested Charms," a low key song about a flirt who is finding out her moment has passed.

Not content with DJing his way around the world, writing for symphony orchestras or composing film soundtracks, the workaholic Sawhney returns with another wildly varied selection of global pop songs. In the past he has sometimes sounded too clever for his own good, as with the barrage of archive fragments on his last album, Human, but this is his most assured, relaxed and successful work yet. The starting point may be cool, contemporary pop ballads like Spark, but he soon veers off into a musical travelogue, mixing strings, flute or sitar in with his keyboards and programmed beats. There's a bit of everything in here, from songs like Dead Man, with its seamless switching between an all-American blues-like riff and an Asian theme, through to a dash of gospel and funk, a poem in Hindi read by his mother, or the more urgent, passionate flamenco-influenced songs featuring Ojos de Brujo, with Nitin joining in on guitar as well.

The Healing Road is the instrumental project led by German keyboardist HansPeter Hess (The Bearded's Project), whose name was inspired by the book by Neil Peart (Rush) "Ghost Rider - Travels On The Healing Road".
"Backdrop" consists in two long pieces of music. To create something different from the previous albums, HansPeter Hess set some guidelines: less Piano sounds, less synthesizers, Moog or Hammond sounds… The album should have an acoustic, rural, pastoral atmosphere and contain as much acoustic instruments as he can get and play. Guitar player Thommy Frank features here, as well as Roland Enders, the latter performing the closing track, being a folk-song written and sung by him.

Cardinal Fuzz present "Warheads", a full-length collaboration between writer/artist Adam Stone and Manchester instrumentalists Dead Sea Apes. Classic British pessimism and speculative dystopian fiction entwine with morbid social commentary and a long piss-streak of bleak humour. This is a claustrophobic and self-contained world where paranoid bunker mentality goes for a Pot Noodle with a faded society always teetering on the brink of collapse, ranting street-punk drops bad acid, and Space Station fuses with Bus Station…

Chris Rea remained one of the best-kept secrets in the music industry, releasing five albums between 1979 and 1983, none of them reaching even the Top 50 in the charts. All were very well received by both the critics and the public who knew the secret. His secret was a brand of late-night rock that had an element of class, not dissimilar at this stage of his career to the early-'80s Dire Straits albums, but totally out of step, and proudly so, with the music of the time – new romantic, power and synth pop. He opened the album Water Sign with the song "Nothing's Happening by the Sea," which was so far laid back it was almost horizontal, with a harmonica instrumental break, and the album closed with a nod to synth pop on the track "Out of the Darkness."

90125 is the eleventh studio album by the English progressive rock band Yes, released on 7 November 1983 by Atco Records. After disbanding in 1981, following the Drama (1980) tour, bassist Chris Squire and drummer Alan White formed Cinema with guitarist and singer-songwriter Trevor Rabin and original Yes keyboardist Tony Kaye, who had left in 1971, and began recording an album. They adopted a more commercial and pop-oriented musical direction as the result of their new material, much of which derived from Rabin's demos, with former Yes singer Trevor Horn as their producer. During the mixing stage former Yes singer Jon Anderson, who had left in 1980, accepted the invitation to return and record the lead vocals, and subsequently Cinema changed their name to Yes.
