One of the 80s best young hard rock/hair metal acts was the wildly underrated Danger Danger. The band’s first two albums were so completely infectious and buoyant that you couldn’t pry the melodies from your head without the jaws of life. One of the essential ingredients to the band’s addictive success was the voice of Ted Poley. So many voices in heavy music these days are generic, but Poley stands among perhaps a dozen or so notable singers whose voice cannot be confused with anyone else’s. His style, sound, and intonation simply set him apart, and his generally happy-go-lucky demeanor makes him a hard voice to ignore. And really, who wants to? This spring Ted Poley returns with his third solo album, Beyond the Fade, his first in nearly a decade.

Not long after You're Gonna Get It, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' label, Shelter, was sold to MCA Records. Petty struggled to free himself from the major label, eventually sending himself into bankruptcy. He settled with MCA and set to work on his third album, digging out some old Mudcrutch numbers and quickly writing new songs. Amazingly, through all the frustration and anguish, Petty & the Heartbreakers delivered their breakthrough and arguably their masterpiece with Damn the Torpedoes…

Anybody who was a little dismayed by the pop inclinations of The Game would have been totally distressed by Queen's 1982 follow-up, Hot Space, an unabashed pop and dance album. The band that once proudly proclaimed not to use synthesizers on their albums has suddenly, dramatically reversed course, devoting the entire first side of the album to robotic, new wave dance-pop, all driven by drum machines and colored by keyboards, with Brian May's guitar coming in as flavor only on occasion…

This is the definitive Kansas recording and includes their most famous tune, "Dust in the Wind." The band is in peak form and also churned out the single "Point of Know Return," which is still played daily on classic rock stations. While their pop-oriented approach and standard rock guitar sound helped define the classic rock sound of the '70s, careful listening reveals that this band's talent goes beyond colleagues such as Bachman-Turner Overdrive and Boston…

Protest Songs was recorded by Prefab Sprout in 1985 in the wake of the masterful Steve McQueen/Two Wheels Good, but shelved in favor of the subsequent From Langley Park to Memphis; it finally surfaced to little fanfare in 1989, appearing almost as mysteriously as it was abandoned four years earlier. It's a wonderful record, but perhaps too close in sound and spirit to Steve McQueen for comfort – From Langley Park, for all its flaws, is a much more adventurous effort, and with the benefit of hindsight, it seems reasonable to assume that Paddy McAloon wished not to stick with the tried-and-true but instead attempt something new and different, successful or not…

Let us travel many years back in time to a lonely place shrouded in heartbreak, isolation, narcissism & nihilism. A foul, fetid place where impish abominations writhe up from the abyss, give name to nameless and overwhelm the senses with illusionary bliss. Make believe vortices give birth to numb complexities; Meanwhile, the psyche, starving for identity, becomes stuck in a circular state of reverie, reminiscing ‘round and ‘round until remembering the memories so incessantly dismembers the memories until they become sheer lunacy.

In 1986, Paul Smith signed with DaySpring Records a division of the Word Records. Live and Learn was a successful album in the Christian music marketplace. He only recorded three albums on this label. By 1990, the record label StarSong pulled away from Word Records and became part of Sparrow Records. Many artists including The Imperials had left Word and signed with StarSong, and Smith also made the move. Human Touch was released in 1991. It would be his only album released on that label.

He also co-wrote the 1980s, Larnelle Harris hit "How Excellent Is Thy Name."

Subtitled Live at the Mistake in Cleveland and released as volumes eight and nine of Voiceprint's Bananamoon Obscura series, this is not the original Divided Alien Playbax LP released in 1982, but a crudely recorded live performance from August 7, 1980. The sound is thin (audience recording, probably), but the good mastering job makes the album enjoyable, albeit a fan-only item (and a collector's item, too, since all volumes in this series are limited to 1,000 copies). In 1980, Daevid Allen toured America solo, singing, reciting and playing guitar over pre-recorded tapes. These playback tracks were put together from the 1980 New York Gong album About Time (featuring a completely revamped Gong lineup that included Fred Maher and Bill Laswell).
