One would be hard-pressed to name a rock album whose influence has been as broad and pervasive as The Velvet Underground & Nico. While it reportedly took over a decade for the album's sales to crack six figures, glam, punk, new wave, goth, noise, and nearly every other left-of-center rock movement owes an audible debt to this set…

Following GBV's sprawling double-album Zeppelin Over China, Robert Pollard has written and recorded another full-length in record-breaking time. It's Warp and Woof (April 26, 2019), exuberantly barreling through 24 songs in just 37 minutes with a brevity similar to mid-90s GBV albums Alien Lanes and Vampire On Titus. GBV kicked this one out in a flash, recorded in studios, club soundchecks, hotel rooms and even in the tour van.

A fiery and intense blend of Rock, Blues, and psych-folk. Be aware - from the vocals, to the guitars, to the lyrics - this is an adventurous Rockabluesic journey that will crawl into your brain cells. This album takes you on an adventure: from the cold tundra of a hard world to the passions of real love. It snakes through the swamp, passes through love’s playgrounds, gets lost in the mist of a forest, and ends up in a flame of fire and light. Robert’s brand of music, Rockabluesic, is punctuated by some of the best guitar you will ever hear. On top of that, the vocals can be haunting or bone-shaking. It has been variously described as breathtaking, life-changing, soothing, and powerful enough to drive a railroad spike. One thing is certain: it will take you to places you’ve always wanted to believe existed.

The Beatles, Dylan, Fairport Convention, Neil Young, The Beach Boys, The Who, Grateful Dead, Fleetwood Mac, Carly Simon, The Ramones, The Clash, The Pretenders, The Smiths and Prince are amongst the 57 acts covered. With guest appearances from Lindsey Buckingham, Steve Howe, Van Dyke Parks and Dhani Harrison, this 60 song package contains all three albums and fifteen previously-hard-to-get bonus tracks plus a 48 page booklet with annotation by Sweet and Hoffs, all gathered together for the first time.

Ohio's status as the secret center of the rock & roll has been well established, and this often becomes evident in unexpected ways. As drummer with the Black Keys, Patrick Carney has been half of one of the most popular acts to emerge from the Buckeye State in the 21st century with their blues-based excursions into indie rock. John Petkovic has never enjoyed a payday on a par with Carney, but as the founding member of Death of Samantha and Cobra Verde (and a brief stint with Guided by Voices), he's got cred to spare as one of Ohio's underground heroes. Bringing Carney and Petkovic together has produced some unexpected results, but the finished product is as interesting as you would expect.

The Liverbirds (sometimes spelled Liver Birds) were one of the more distinctive outfits in Liverpool (and anywhere else, for that matter) by virtue of the fact that they were a hard-rocking all-girl group, self-contained instrumentally and focused on rhythm & blues. They weren't too successful musically in Liverpool, but in 1963 they went to Hamburg, where they became one of the most popular acts ever to play the Star-Club. Irene Green (vocals), Sheila McGlory (guitar, vocals), Mary McGlory (bass, vocals), Pamela Birch (guitar, vocals), Valerie Gell (guitar, vocals), and Sylvia Saunders (drums) got together in early 1962 under the name the Debutones, before changing it to the more city-specific Liverbirds.

Tomorrow Today (1969). Hardin & York's debut album was quite competent yet derivative early progressive rock, and derivative of Traffic in particular. At least, however, it came by its influences quite honestly, Pete York having drummed behind Steve Winwood in the Spencer Davis Group, and Eddie Hardin having joined the Spencer Davis Group after Winwood left. And the duo does get quite a lot of sound out of their keyboards and drums, although they had plenty of backup from some session musicians. Hardin sings and writes uncannily like Winwood circa Traffic's "Forty Thousand Headmen" period, but while that's a good standard to shoot for, therein also lies the problem: it's not quite as good as the Winwood-paced Traffic, and certainly not as original…

Subtitled Live at the Mistake in Cleveland and released as volumes eight and nine of Voiceprint's Bananamoon Obscura series, this is not the original Divided Alien Playbax LP released in 1982, but a crudely recorded live performance from August 7, 1980. The sound is thin (audience recording, probably), but the good mastering job makes the album enjoyable, albeit a fan-only item (and a collector's item, too, since all volumes in this series are limited to 1,000 copies). In 1980, Daevid Allen toured America solo, singing, reciting and playing guitar over pre-recorded tapes. These playback tracks were put together from the 1980 New York Gong album About Time (featuring a completely revamped Gong lineup that included Fred Maher and Bill Laswell).

2007 digitally remastered reissue of this 1976 solo album from the Gong leader. In 1975, following his departure from Gong, the highly influential group he had founded, Daevid Allen sought musical solace in the village of Deja on the island of Mallorca. Here he encountered a group of Catalan musicians, Euterpe, with whom Allen began a collaboration. Recorded in Mallorca, this album was released by Virgin Records to great acclaim, being a unique work that was regarded by fans and critics as being equally as good as anything he recorded with Gong, if not better.
