Despite being the premiere of heavy metal, Jeff Beck's Truth has never quite carried its reputation the way the early albums by Led Zeppelin did, or even Cream's two most popular LPs, mostly as a result of the erratic nature of the guitarist's subsequent work. Time has muted some of its daring, radical nature, elements of which were appropriated by practically every metal band (and most arena rock bands) that followed. Truth was almost as groundbreaking and influential a record as the first Beatles, Rolling Stones, or Who albums…

The first (but certainly not the last) of the compilations issued in the wake of T. Rex's U.K. chart breakthrough, Bolan Boogie was also many of the band's new fans' first chance to acquaint themselves with all that Marc Bolan had done in the past – a point which the compilers certainly kept in mind. The catalog at their disposal was vast, reaching back to the acoustic birth of Tyrannosaurus Rex. Sensibly, however, Bolan Boogie concentrates on the material that lived up its title – aside from one cut drawn from 1969's Unicorn, the entire album dated from the arrival of Mickey Finn, and the attendant headlong dive into electricity launched by the Beard of Stars album, and culminating with the epochal Electric Warrior album. Some incontrovertible classics emerge.

GAS-S-S-S is the 1970 soundtrack album. The film was also known as Gas! or It Became Necessary to Destroy the World in Order to Save It, produced and directed by Roger Corman. A few of the artists on the sountrack and in the film were incognito: The Gourmet's Delight are actually The Joy Of Cooking while Johnny & The Tornados were The Fish (of Country Joe & The Fish fame) but without Country Joe McDonald. American International Films released this on their own label.

The British band Fantasy released two albums in the early '70s of predominantly pastoral progressive rock. Originally called FireQueen, the group was comprised of Paul Lawrence (vocals, guitar), David Metcalfe (keyboards), and Dave Read (bass). Their first album was Paint a Picture (1973), a mellow and imaginative collection of song-based material that featured a heavy use of acoustic guitars, Hammond organs, and pianos. In 1974, the band recorded Beyond the Beyond, which was not released until 1992. The album saw the group expanding their sound into more quintessential progressive material while remaining true to the pastoral sound of their debut.

LET IT WANDER signals a new beginning for the band as they move beyond their original musical mandate of evoking the spirit of the Dead and fully embrace their own personality. “More than anything, what you hear on this album is a band growing into its own sound,” Casal says. The songs on LET IT WANDER are focused and filled with imaginative musical turns. Horne and Levy form a veritable groove machine that knows intuitively when to tighten up and when to stretch out. They expand and collapse the rhythmic pocket around Casal and MacDougall, who pass melodies back and forth in an elaborate game of musical tag as they take turns adding color and shade from a seemingly endless kaleidoscope of cosmic sounds.

This is space rock, but they have also taken on many influences from world music and fusion, with the result being an album that is incredibly impressive and inviting. Psychedelic, progressive, meandering yet with direction, this is an album that fans of bands such as Ozrics or Gong should be seeking out.
Vespero got together as a quartet (Arkady Fedotov - vocals, bass, flute, synths; Valentin Rulev - violin, synths; Ivan Fedotov - drums, percussion; Alexander Kuzovlev - guitar, bass, synths) in Astrakhan (south of Russia) 2003 on the common interest in playing psychedelic music. Later Natalya Tjurina (vocals) joined, and the band moved into more progressive rock-related areas…

Classical Smoke is the 1969 album by The Kasenetz-Katz Orchestral Cirkus. The "Cirkus" were a supergroup of sorts originally called the The Kasenetz-Katz Super Circus, sometimes known as The Kasenetz-Katz Singing Orchestral Circus. They were a "powerhouse" formed in the 1960's by producers Jerry Kasenetz and Jeff Katz, and actually were an amalgamation of a number of other groups, including The Ohio Express, The 1910 Fruitgum Company, The Music Explosion, Lt. Garcia's Magic Music Box, The Teri Nelson Group, 1989 Musical Marching Zoo, J.C.W. Ratfinks, and The St. Louis Invisible Marching Band. Were they all one and the same group? Unknown at this time but Classical Smoke was their second and last album, mixing up pop, psychedelic rock with touches of classical influences, which means they could be royalty free. Re-imagine a time when you would slap this record on your phonograph, pour lava lamp juice all over your body to conduct an "Orgy Of Lust". It is orgasmic, isn't it? There may be only 30 minutes and 15 seconds of music but this is 30 minutes and 15 seconds of Classical Smoke, do not over exert yourself. This was released on the Buddah Records subsidiary label Super K, created by Kasenetz and Katz because they were super men.

Leading Science Fantasy author Michael Moorcock enjoyed a long collaboration with Space Rock kings Hawkwind eventually forming his own outfit Deep Fix to record this conceptual album in 1975. Featuring Members of Hawkwind and guitarist Snowy White, “The New Worlds Fair” was a stunning work inspired by Moorcock’s writings and was wonderfully conceived and delivered. The Esoteric reissue is remastered from the original tapes and includes 7 bonus tracks, 3 of which are previously unreleased. TIt an essential release for fans of Hawkwind, Moorcock and Science Fantasy.

Later Natalya Tjurina (vocals) joined, and the band moved into more progressive rock-related areas. As their Moscow fellows Kaftan Smekha, Vespero are deeply influenced by avant theatre and experimental poetry. Since the very first demos their sound has been influenced by Gong, early Pink Floyd, Faust and related bands from that era. Highly recommended for all fans of these (and beyond!). This album contains live performances of Angel Ontalva and Vespero recording during 2017/2018. Includes 3 unpublished tracks.

This set collects the Hollies' first two U.S. albums, 1964’s Here I Go Again and 1965’s Hear! Here!, on a single disc. Both LPs were originally released in the States by Imperial Records, a label founded in 1947 by Lew Chudd, who had sold his rights in the imprint to Liberty Records in 1963. Liberty began leasing material by popular U.K. artists for U.S. distribution that same year, which led to the Hollies' initial single in the American market, a cover version of Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs' 1960 hit “Stay.” Although several of the cuts found here got extensive radio airplay in the U.S. at the time, “Just One Look” and “Here I Go Again” from 1964 and “I’m Alive” and “Look Through Any Window” from 1965 among them, the Hollies didn’t really break through on the continent until a year later in 1966 with the hits “Bus Stop” and “Stop Stop Stop,” and neither of those songs is found here. Aside from the singles, most of the cuts on these two albums are covers of American R&B tunes that are done capably but without a whole lot of originality. The end result is a portrait of a promising band just beginning to come into its own.

Crown of Creation appeared ten months after their last album, After Bathing at Baxter's, and it doesn't take the same kind of leap forward that Baxter's did from Surrealistic Pillow. Indeed, in many ways, Crown of Creation is a more conservative album stylistically, opening with "Lather," a Grace Slick original that was one of the group's very last forays (and certainly their last prominent one) into a folk idiom. Much of what follows is a lot more based in electric rock, as well as steeped in elements of science fiction (specifically author John Wyndham's book The Chrysalids) in several places, but Crown of Creation was still deliberately more accessible musically than its predecessor, even as the playing became more bold and daring within more traditional song structures…
