The title of My Name Ain't Suzie may evoke the 1960 American film The World of Suzie Wong, but this gritty Shaw Brothers production presents a far less glamorized account of the lives of Hong Kong prostitutes than the popular American romance did. Pat Ha stars as Shui Mei, a poor girl from a fishing village who goes to work as a prostitute at the Lucky Bar in Wanchai. Run by Madam Monie (Betty Ting Pei), the bar is a den of sin for western sailors, who frequent the establishment for their shore leave fix of sexual satisfaction. When Shui Mei meets handsome Eurasian Jimmy, she starts a feud with the Lucky Bar's manager Angela Yu Chien for Jimmy's affections. The quarrel gets Shui Mei kicked out of the Lucky Bar, and forces her to ultimately ply her trade on Hong Kong's mean streets.

Directed by Angela Chan On Kei, My Name Ain't Suzie presents a more authentic portrait of the bar girl life than the usual glamorized accounts, and features a stellar starring performance by Pat Ha, who was nominated for a Best Actress Hong Kong Film Award. Deannie Ip took home a Best Supporting Actress award for her portrayal of tough gang boss Ying, Shui Mei's eventual friend and benefactor. My Name Ain't Suzie is an intriguing and intelligent look at the world's oldest profession, Hong Kong-style.
