The 7th century is the time of the Great Migration of the Peoples. Under the pressure of the invaders the proto-Bulgarian tribes of Khan Kubrat are forced to split in four parts in the hope that one would survive. For twenty long years Kubrat's youngest son Khan Asparoukh led his people across many foreign lands to find eventually a new homeland on the Balkan Peninsula and this time forever. The story is told by Byzantine Velisarius, a hostage with the Bulgarian who witnesses the whole of their difficult march. He sees the suffering of the people whom he already feels close to his heart and the personal drama of their Khan Asparoukh. In 681, in alliance with the local Slav tribes, the proto-Bulgarian deal a decisive blow on numerous Byzantine army, thus 13 centuries ago the foundations of the Bulgarian state and nation were laid down.

The story begins with a serious disillusionment experienced by a young girl at her school-leaving farewell ball. Apostol, an architect on this side of forty, meets by chance Bella at a swimming pool on the night of her graduation party. The generation gap is a wide one, but Bella falls sway to his intelligence, friends, his life-style and the respect everybody shows for her. Boyan is an actor and comic impersonator. The complex relationships among the three characters hover between friendship and love and involve certain professional motifs.

A pretty woman, the divorced mother of a child, works as a secretary at a research institute. She is taking an external degree. It all looks quite normal. In fact, she is experiencing serious difficulties: she has a problem with her ex-husband, her child is going through a difficult age, a sycophant at the institute is exerting pressure on her and the jealous wife of her boss makes malicious reports against her. She is forced to fight for each breath and to violate even her own principles in order to survive.
